This is about the reaction that Shawn Michaels got from the Montreal crowd on Monday night.
Has Shawn Michaels been forgiven?
September 19, 2006
Monday night, RAW was live from Montreal, and the WWE fans in the Bell Centre cheered rabidly for D-Generation X. That's no surprise, right? Normally, it wouldn't be, but for the past decade, Shawn has been quite possibly Public Enemy No. 1 in the "City of Saints."
On Nov. 9, 1997, Shawn was part of the infamous "Montreal Screwjob," in which Canadian hero Bret "Hitman" Hart was screwed out of the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. When HBK put Hart in his own Sharpshooter, WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon ordered the timekeeper to "ring the f'ing bell" and declare Michaels as the new champion.
Since that day, Michaels has been one of the most hated men in Montreal...and most of Canada for that matter. While he is universally cheered almost worldwide, Canadian WWE fans have never forgotten Survivor Series, booing Michaels everywhere he goes and chanting "You Screwed Bret!" at him.
However, on Monday night, Shawn heard the cheers of the Montreal crowd for the first time in a decade. One night after DX was at Unforgiven in Toronto, it appeared that HBK may have finally been forgiven in Montreal. It was a moment so surreall that HBK himself had to wonder if Hell had frozen over.
