Those are just guestimates. Make a site with good content, and ask here and
there for a link. That's all.

You don't submit to engines, only directories.

Submitting your website to search engines is a lot like feeding a cat....
If you put a brand of food in your cats bowl that he/she doesn't like,
he/she will simply ignore it and go elsewhere....

In the same way, you can submit your website to search engines until you're
blue in the face, but if there's nothing *tasty* on it for the search
engines to chew on, they will look right past your site as if it never
existed....

The best thing you can do is get some seriously good content on there and
let the search engines find you....You can aid this process by subbing to a
few directories and swapping links with a handfull of sites whith a good SE
rating.....

In short, there really is no quick and easy fix.....

There are other, more effective methods of attracting good qualified traffic
than search engines anyway, and most of them are free.....Viral marketting,
guerilla marketting, rumour-mongering, press manipulation, and publicity
stunts....

A few examples follow

*Guerilla marketing*
Involves free and occasionally underhanded (but not unethical)
techniques....
1. Make up little 1 inch x 1 inch stickers with your url on. Put them
everywhere. Places like cashpoints, phone boxes, back of toilet doors,
escalator handrails....you get the idea....
2. Write your URL in the dirt on the back of lorries, busses, vans
etc.....
3. Make up flyers, go into newsagents, and slip them into magazines and
publications that are relevant to your subject......
4 Register domain names that are subtle miss-spellings of your main
competitors URL.....
5. Make up posters featuring only your URL in big bold letters. Then go
out in your car at night, and stick them on the back of motorway
road-signs.....This is a vastly underused advertising real estate....
6. Make up flyers and go round twon centre car-parks and tha car parks at
venues and tourist attractions, slipping them under peoples windscreen
wipers.....(check local regulations first)

*Press Manipulation*
1. Put out a press release with a story so tantalising that the journo's
can't resist it.....If possible, time it for a slow news week.....
2. Email EVERY radio station, presenter, and TV show with details of your
website....It only takes one of them to pick up on it.....
3. Attend public events, where you know there will be TV cameras present,
wearing a T-shirt bearing your URL, or else hold up a banner with your url
in full view of the cameras.....
4. Write letters to magazines and newspapers with a hint of humour, and
subtly dropping your url into it.....

*Publicity Stunts*
1. Get a gorrilla costume or something like that and put it on, with a
vest bearing your URL.....Now dance through the town centre on a busy
Saturday handing out leaflets....Do a different town each day.....
2. Persuade someone to streak while carrying a flag bearing your URL

*Viral Marketting*
1. Get to work with Flash or a camcorder....Make a movie thats funny, or
distictly memorable, and ends with a clear shot of your URL....Either that,
or make an addictive Flash game with several hyperlinks pointing to your
website.....Release it to the online community and let the rest of the world
do your work for you.....

I would be careful about doing that in the U.S. The reason its vastly unused
here is because the feds will get you. If you are going to put out road
spam, do like the smart road spammers do and put it on your own wired frame
and don't put them outside of a city. The federal law ends at city limits.
It's still probably against the city code though.
