Default Domain Name Registrar

My Domain Name Registrar appears to be headed for bankruptcy. What
problem(s) am I facing? If the name is not released by them, I cannot
register it with anyone else, right?

I think the name is posted to the system and stays until a change is
posted. Otherwise the system would be overloaded constantly rechecking
that www.google.com (for example) is still there. If that is correct,
then all I have to do is wait until they do fail completely - thereby
releasing the name.

TIA

Q: Why is it such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet?

Mmm kinda, but not quite how I would do it

what sort of domain name is it ? (TLD - .co.uk, .com or something else)

you can normally transfer them easily ...

An actual registrar or one of their resellers? If your domain is with one
of their resellers, contact the registrar directly and tell them you want to
move to one of their other resellers and tell them why.

Well, the man did say Registrar. To the OP, do tell us the name of this
registrar that's going bankrupt.

"go south", "kick the bucket", "bite the big one", "take the final

We also say "tits up". But only when we're being elegant.

For your information I found (google = stargate bankrupt)
http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburg...5/smallb1.html
which makes me a lot more comfortable.

I would still like to find out how domain names are maintained. Are
they posted and stay until a change is made or do they have to be
re-posted at some interval? Any pointers toward an answer welcomed.
