From the looks, unrelated IP addresses, I would guess that zombies are used
to do this spamming.

I just changed my minimal message length to 80 :-)

Next step will be renaming some input fields (e.g. calling author url ;-) )

Join the club, John. I tried changing default fields (are you using
'in-house' forms by the way?), added CAPTCHA, added many filters including
Spaminator. I still struggle to purge about 50-100 messages per day in 2
sites. Only 10% will bubble through, but it is enough to upset a webmaster.
If not erased quickly enough, it only encourages more.

Save the trouble, John. Changes will only cater as a temporary solution.
Consider closing comments altogether. I know I do.

I have to concur with Roy S. Schestowitz. I have been running dozens of
geeklogs for a number of yrs and last year it didnt matter what you did
to filter out possible spam comment attacks or upgrade your cms. In the
end it was only wise to disable comments from those sites getting hit.
The comment spammers always find a new way to get on your sites,
especially if you have a decent google PR.

I've started getting a bit of comment spam on my site, so I've switched
from retro-moderation to full moderation. Seems to have slowed down a bit
since.

Thanks for supporting my point.

You still need to manually handle comments, which can become a nuisance. If
it hasn't yet become a nuisance, you are yet to see the worst. As long as
there is financial incentive, the spammers will continue to hit. Getting
zombies/proxies is easy, losing them is rare.

The best thing to do other than closing comments is use a seriers of
filters:
- Have users log in before posting comments
- Using Capcha
- Reject all comments with URls
- Use something like http://www.angrypets.com/tools/rdos/

and after all these filters, you should be left by comments left by
persistent human posters, hopefully very few or none, then do a full
moderation. Only usefull comments will be posted then.

I prefer to read blogs with good comments than blogs with no comments.
