| Civilians | For those of you who may have missed it, see my post from yesterday under Domain Name Spying/squatting/hijacking or whatever this might be called. I'm gonna try something. Jimsoptical.com franksoptical.com bobsoptical.com fredsoptical.com tedsoptical.com johnsoptical.com Are all available at the moment I plan to use www.netsol.com to perform a search for the first three. I'll do that at least three times. I'll then use a unsecured Godaddy.com search to perform a search for the second three. If my guess is correct, nameview.com is spying on these searches and will snap up a couple of them. If I am wrong, I will presume that I was a victim of pure coincidence. I'll post my findings if anything develops. -- Jim |

| Civilians | And lo, Jim didst speak in alt.www.webmaster: > I'm gonna try something. > > [snip] > > I'll post my findings if anything develops. I, for one, will be interested in seeing the results Good idea.Grey -- The technical axiom that nothing is impossible sinisterly implies the pitfall corollory that nothing is ridiculous. - http://www.greywyvern.com - Orca Knowledgebase: Completely CSS styleable Knowledgebase/FAQ system |

Some enterprising individuals went out and bought common named ones, then sold them back to the corporations for big bucks. Then they refined the rules, and that practice is no longer practical for trade names. I believe I remember that correctly. But, with advancing Alzheimer's, Male Pre Menstrual Syndrome, and morning after fuzziness, I'm not always sure any more. It is amazing how hard it is to get domain names any more unless you do your own name or something really specific. It will be interesting to watch your experiment. If you do find spying, where will you take it? Steve |

It's just that I, as a human (I think), would smell a rat - or at least a series of searches for namesoptical.com wouldnt strike me as a dead-cert for registration. And I don't think this would be an automatic process, it would take a human 'expert' to hazard a guess at which domain names were likely to be worthy of registering. I would dream up a series of unrelated domain names, and randomly divide them between your two test candidates. Also, by publishing the domains in advance, I'm guessing that some punters on A.W.W. would take a peek themselves. Might this influence the results? I suppose if we all started looking up jimsoptical on GoDaddy, and they *were* corrupt, it would be very tempting bait for them... I think I'm thinking about all of this a little too much. I should just go home early. Chris |
