Thanks but how do you install a google-toolbar.xpi file under XP ?

Open it directly from the link on a website, or double-click on it from
Windows Explorer.

Ok, I installed it now, but it displays no page rank information, which
makes it pretty useless.

for the pagerank tool for firefox try
http://www.tapouillo.com/firefox_extension/
it shows pagerank in right bottom corner
but i don't know why for some websites pagerank is unavalible
