| Civilians | Any AH customers fleeing the wreckage facing this issue? I've got a .org I was trying to transfer and the transfer was held up by a ClientTransferProhibited status on the domain name. I have no idea how that might have gotten there as all the bills are paid. This was orginally registered with affordabledots. I wonder if it's because perhaps that was my master domain wit their cpanel service? Dunno. -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ |

Most registrars lock domains automatically these days, whether you ask for it or not. I'm pretty sure you'd get a message like "ClientTransferProhibited" if the domain had the "REGISTRANT-LOCK" flag on. You should NEVER, ever, HAVE your DOMAIN registered with anyone that is not a direct or 2nd tier certified registrar. On top of that, you should never have your domain registered with the same company that is also hosting your website. That way you have control of your domain name at all times, even when your site provider goes down the tube or sells to someone that doesn't do what you need. All you have to do then is get another webhost and tell the domain registrar to change the pointers. This can happen within 24 hours in most cases. I've been able to move a site and have it hardly blink by leaving the old location live while it propagates to the new provider. Most of you can see signs of problems, so why risk losing business when it's so easy to research who is doing a good job and switch providers? So, you have a couple hundred invested in unused months of service. Are you going to toss all you worked for just to try to use that bought space while it's sinking right before your eyes? Tom J no expert, but I can see trouble when it starts |

Cus even if you completely trust the people there today, they might sell the joint tomorrow. Hypothetically of course. > Most of you can see signs of problems, so why risk losing business > when it's so easy to research who is doing a good job and switch > providers? Obviously, of course that's the very tack I'm attempting. :-) -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ |

I finally got the status out of ClientTransferProhibited by doing a global editing and unsetting registrar lock on the domains in question. This appears to be a bug in the affordabledots domain control panel that doesn't affect .com domains. The .org domains i have in their interface do not have the registrar locking checkbox under the usual location. The workaround I discovered is that you can set/unset locking via the global edit function. Either that, or independent of whatever I've been doing myself, they actually had a tech doing something on my 2 tickets. Lame. But not surprising, all things considered. Hope this helps someone flee the wreckage. -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ |
