| Civilians | Do you think future browsers will support tables if CSS usage becomes almost universal? -- Charles Sweeney http://CharlesSweeney.com |

Tables in general will always be supported I think, as long as there is tabular data out there. For layout purposes, the width and height property on table cells would need to be honoured, and they're already removed from the HTML (Strict), but I don't think they'd be removed from CSS. IOW, I think tables will be abused for layout purposes in the future, just like they are now. -- Els http://locusmeus.com/ Sonhos vem. Sonhos vão. O resto é imperfeito. - Renato Russo - |

Well, tables ARE still the preferred method for formatting tabular data, so I don't see them being deprecated any time soon ![]() |

Until CSS gets its act together (actually, more so the browser makers) and allows for simple centering and simple height matching and the like, they certainly will be. |

| Civilians | Charles Sweeney wrote > Do you think future browsers will support tables if CSS usage becomes > almost universal? Thanks for the replies. I think there is a consensus[1] here. My thinking was that people would use CSS to present tabular data. I appreciate the difference between "style" and data, but I am thinking quite a way down the line, where CSS may evolve to do everything. Personally I have no need to learn CSS for layout, so it would suit me if the support for tables continued! From what I have read here, I feel suitably encouraged. [1] I will stop using "consensus" as my word-of-the-week, if Dylan stops using "semantics" as his! -- Charles Sweeney http://CharlesSweeney.com |
