| Civilians | Hi, I'm Rip Van Winkle. I recently woke up from a very deep sleep and decided that Internet Technology is something I want to learn. Actually, I've wanted to learn it for awhile, but am simply a self-starter with aptitude. I would like to learn how to create and develop websites, and...more. Oh, yeah...and maybe learn how to hack & tweak, unless, of course, that's illegal, which, with my personality, I would probably want to do anyway. I'm fairly smart, I'm substantially older than 13, but I have all of this hair and these cobwebs are in the way. So....what do I do next? Where do I start? I have a domain ready to go.....I feel like I'm all dressed up to go out on the town, but there are no activities. What would be the next step for me? Find a host with the most? Then what? I've tried a lot of sites & group forums, but, apparently I am just too strange for the mainstream. Maybe a good fit here? Any suggestions, even sarcastic, would be appreciated. I like Guinness beer, by the way, if that helps. |

There's a difference between just doing something illegal and being a person to despise. Hackers fall into the second category. Host with the most isn't that important. I'd recommend building your own site and hosting it on your own machine if you are in it to learn. -- Jim Snape of Page-Zone Web Hosting http://www.page-zone.com |

There is more than enough "hackers defined by TV/Movies" going on. Gandalf Parker -- www.alt-hacker.org |

I definitely fall into the tinker and explore area, and have no wish to be a baddie. So...I need to focus on building my own site. Where to begin? I have software that I can enable, unfortunately, it's all French to me. I suppose I need to learn the language. Hosting on my own machine sounds very alluring. Thanks for the help. |

There are black hats, grey hats, and white hats which all use "hacking" as the method, just different goals. (the alt.hacker newsgroup and the www.alt-hacker.org website are very strict white hats) > So...I need to focus on building my own site. Where to begin? It doesnt take as much as people think. Any old computer in the closet because it wont run the latest stuff can provide more hosting than you will get from sharing a machine with hundreds of people. I would go into that more but it sounds like you are not quite there yet. Are we talking about windows, mac, linux? Then it tends to go.. making a page, making a site, hosting a site, becoming your own ISP. (in my case Im working my way backwards thru that list and am here to get help on the making web page part) Gandalf Parker -- www.Any1can.net |

I'd get some pre-written html code and start modifying it to see what happens and go from there. I'm sure an instructor would say something completely different. It's not that hard, and there are only a small number of basic html tags. The server part is much more fun though. :-) -- Jim Snape of Page-Zone Web Hosting http://www.page-zone.com |
