Hi Sarah,

In most instances access will fit the bill, only if you are going to have a
large database (1GB+) with loads of users would I recommend SQL/MSDE with
SQL server it will cost you, the MSDE is a cut down version of SQL server it
is free it is a good point to start because if you ever want/need to scale
up to SQL the process is very simple. How large and how complicated is the
database going to be?

Not sure I'd recommend MSDE for a large database with loads of users. MSDE
has the same size limitation as Access (i.e.: 2 Gb), plus is throttled for 5
connections.

Hi Doug,

the MSDE it is a good tool to start with if you don't know what direction
you are going in, especially if you are outgrowing access, so that you can
at least see what the differences between access and SQL are. The cost of
SQL is prohibitive for small developments, and hey if you have the nice to
have problem of too many users start spending money at that point rather
than at the start of the project.

but agree the sentiment on the larger size developments.
