Default AdWords vs Pay Per Click - Looking for help please.

Hi and please forgive my novice approach.

I'm trying to increase traffic to a website, a gift store with approximately 50% of my content being Zippo products. Although the site is listed with most search engines my pages usually rank very low in the listings.

The owner doesn't want banner adds or reciprocal links on the site.

I'm considering Google AdWords or using a Pay Per Click service.

I've got a budget to begin with of only $100.

I'd like to get the most bang for my buck of course and I'm worried about companies that pay people surf the web. Whatever I use, I would like - if possible - to be able to ascertain that people (competitors or people being paid to click/surf) aren't depleting my funds.

Any advice on good approaches or companies or pitfalls (and companies to stay clear of) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You might want to try PPC with www.overture.com. I've gotten better results with them than Google AdWords.

My only advice - get a bigger budget.

Even if people aren't paid to click or surf your site, your funds may
be depleted by people who decide to visit your site but don't buy
anything.

That's not a lot of money (is that monthly?), even if you manage to
keep the average PPC cost to $0.10 that's just 1000 visitors (a
month). Realistically with Google and Overture the average PPC visitor
is far higher than $0.10 so you might only get a few hundred visitors
for $100.

This leads to high CTR but poor conversion.

It's a "documented" fact that high CTR ads in lower positions
convert better -- all things being equal.

So, I stick by my original response. If you have bottomless
pockets, knock yourself out and bid right to the top. We've done
that on multiple campaigns in the past, but never again. We get
more sales on less money in every campaign we run doing it the
"time tested" method.

I'll take results any day -- personally.
