Yes, AOL issues a new IP address for every request made, so a page
with 1 style sheet and 6 images will potentially log as many as 8
different IP addresses in quick sucession.

Is that right? One user browsing a single page will register a different IP
number for each hit? I've never heard that before and would be interested to
know if that is cast iron.

No "will" but "may". Allegedly.

It's neither improbable nor unlikely. I came across it in one of the
"how the web works" documents, I think it was the one produced by the
Canadian government. In any event it was a reliable and reputable
source.
