Default Web counter recommendations

Can someone please recommend a good, free Web counter that doesn't
require links to the sponsor showing on my Web site?

Thank you.

Tony

You are visitor #<?php rand(1000,100000) ?>

(Hint: counters scream "I'm a n00b!", and don't mean anything anyway)

Does your host provide web stats or raw web log files? If so, you're
much better to report based on those that with hit counters.

No.

Tne words "good" and "free" are tough enough, but "good" and "web counter"
simply don't go together.

I am using http://www.statcounter.com/ for a few of my sites. They do
require you to upgrade if you get too many hits. I basicly use it on domains
I am planning to sell as a "3rd" party to prove the traffic.

Tony,

most of the free services need to recoup their costs somehow which is why
they like you to display a banner - with the hope that the advertising they
get from that will bring them further customers or that you will pay to have
the banner removed. Something else to be aware of is that even if a service
is free/invisible now, that it may change in the future.

I maintain on my website a list of counters
(http://www.cryer.co.uk/resources/websitecounters.htm) and trackers
(http://www.cryer.co.uk/resources/websitetracking.htm). I accept that the
distinction between a tracker and a counter is blurred. But I take a tracker
to be something that will let you see how visitors have navigated through
your site - and these don't generally give you a visible counter service,
whilst a counter will give you the option of a visible counter on your page.
So it depends a little what you are after.

That said, the ones I'm aware of that don't require you to display a banner
(or at least didn't the last time I checked):

Web counters:
www.gemstats.com
www.nextgenstats.com
www.statcounter.com

Web trackers:
www.indextools.com

each of these will have different terms and conditions - typically there are
limits on the number of page views before you must upgrade to a paid
service.

hope this helps,

Brian Cryer

Hit counters are an addictive refuge for webmasters with low self-esteem.
You *can* beat this addiction; call your local help-line.
