| Civilians | I have a question: If you want to find out the web hosting company of a particular website .... how does one do that? I am having trouble with a website, and I want to contact the website's web hosting company. I did a whois search .... but that just gave the registrant, technical and admin info. I want to know the actaul webhost. Suggestions? Thanks!! KFM |

Firstly, if you do a whois search at http://www.dnsstuff.com/ it should come up with information about the registrar of the domain. This may not be the same as the host, so go to their website or search on Google to check it out. If this is unsuccessful, look for the addresses of the domain's name servers on the same page. These may give away the identity of the host. Try typing them into your web browser, but replace the ns1 or whatever at the start with www. Another technique is to perform a DNS lookup on the website to find out its IP address (use the site mentioned above). If the site is hosted on a shared server, typing this number into your browser may take you to the host's homepage. If none of these methods work, you could use the traceroute tool to see which servers a request for the website goes through. The names of these servers may give you some clue as to where the site is hosted. Some really drastic measures include using the city from IP tool to find where the server is located and searching on Google for hosts based in this city, or scanning for servers with port 80 open in the same IP range as the website and seeing if any of them lead you to the host. Or, you could just email the webmaster and ask him nicely ;-) -- qwertee |
