Default A good advanced into into Apache modules?

I am NOT new to apache. I ran apache for about 5 years and used
mod_perl and Embperl. Right now I feel a need to redesign my website

www.algebra.com

I want to add large quantity of new stuff, add better session
management, etc. What I have is done relatively poorly and used 5 year
old technollgy.

I want to try a systematic approach. So, I want to learn in more
detail about what apache modules in general and mod_perl modules can
do for me. I did google a bit and did not find any good references
that would be comprehensive enough. I am willing, if necessary, to
spend $$ and buy books.

I do not want to reinvent the wheel, so, I need to know what major
existing apache and mod_perl modules can do for me, and how to use
them.

Any suggestions would from you intelligent, beautiful looking people
will be warmly appreciated.

thanks

i
