| Civilians | I am sorry, but I have to scream. Every time I drop in here I see all these headers that cry, "Need FREE hosting!", Need Free registration", "Must be CHEAP", "Must be affordable". Are these websites so worthless, so devoid of value, that someone will not spend the price of a weekly beer on them? What's the problem here? Are the Homeless running websites now? I have had sites since 1987, and like most things, I have found that if you are lucky, you might get what you pay for. "Free" means "Zero Value". Having just cleaned up hundreds of trojans, etc from a niece's computer from "free" downloading and dubious "services", I want to repeat a phrase I drove into her head: "Nothing is really "FREE", dammit." I am sorry for the rant, in a way, but it needs to be said: If someone cannot afford a dollar/Euro or two a week, maybe they should get off the WWW and the dole, and try getting a JOB. Or leaving the cocaine alone. Bah. |

Something must be rotten in the kingdom of Norway, because we Norwegians can get a quite decent website for free at http://home.no.net/ ! (I have nothing to do with home.no.net, I'm just a user.) My website gives me no income, so why would I pay for it when I don't have to? And not everybody can get a job, either because they are sick or disabled, or just because there *are* no jobs in their district... *And* all unemployed aren't drug addicts, either... -- Inger Helene Falch-Jacobsen http://home.no.net/ingernet/ |

Because it's a hobby. Why does someone have to provide resources for someone else's avocation? Example: I need new fuel injectors for my Jaguar. Low impedance Bosche's, please. I deserve them free, and expect someone to donate these resources. Preferably next week. Or, at worst, they have to be CHEAP. >And not everybody can get a job, either because >they are sick or disabled, or just because there >*are* no jobs in their district... I have been unemployed in various reccesionary periods, myself. And when I was, I made decisions on what I could afford, and what I could not. Nobody "owed" me free anything, nor did I expect to be provided with free resources for a hobby. There is no UN Declaration that the World is entitled to free hobbies. (Though it would not surprise me if there were...) I am NOT trying to be adversarial! It is just that I keep seeing these posts all the time, and wonder what people are expecting, and what kind of disappointments are awaiting them in the future. Do you realize that there have been headers where people are COMPLAINING about the quaity of FREE hosting, etc..? |
