Default Experience of 1&1?

Hi,

I'm looking for a new host - 1&1 seem to be the market leader. Does anyone
have any experience if using 1&1? I used FastHosts when they first started
up and got badly burned (although they seem to be better now, some 3 years
on).

Thanks

Their support department is absolutely and completely useless!

I have the free 3 year professional trial they gave out last year.
Its not bad. I did email support once because I changed the htaccess
for customized error pages, but *.cgi pages were still going to the
default.

The support was useless, but I don't know if it is because I have a
free account. I had to email the same support tech (i think) a number
of times before he understood the problem, and the response was
something like "no" you can't change it/we can't fix it.

The admin panel is slow for my tastes, but the service itself is fast,
no downtime issues for me. I also was able to download a large file
from my website and it pushed my home DSL connection to the speed
limit (1.3Mbps), it did that every time I tried it. Thus they don't
seem to "overshare" the servers.

They offer SSH/telnet, which is great, and ftp and such..

Will I pay for it when my free trial is up? Yes, most likely I
will, depending on the price when the time arrives.
