Default Turning hits (i.e. traffic into money)

I cannot for the life of me understand why people buy mis-spellings of
Vaio.com (for example - Sony's Video-Audio-Intergrated-Operation)
knowing that people will accidently type in http://www.viao.com/ or
http://www.vaoi.com/ )

do they make money from affiliate links? advertising?

www.321studios.com make (or used to make) dvdcopying software. I notice
someonw registered www.123studios.com and put affiliate links to
competitors software. Is this sneaky or clever? do they really make
enough money to justify the hassle?

Not sure about making money from mis-spelt domain names, but I hear of
people making bargain purchases on Ebay due to spelling mistakes on
items for sale.

Some people make an art of searching for "Hewlet Pakard" etc - And find
sale items that nobody else gets to see.

Usually, yes. Some people buy misspellings or expired domains purely to
take advantage of lost traffic.

yes.. specially misspellings to popular sites. yhoo.com, yaahoo.com... etc.
These mispelling still amount to many requests and you don't have to do any
kind of advertising.

Maybe. Domain names are very cheap. It easy to forget whether the name
starts with 123 or 321.
