| Civilians | I need some opinions from the WWW Webmaster Wisdom Pool. I'm moving a couple of small sites from an ISP's[1] barebones-featured hosting to a "real" (it's their bag - it's not just a sidelight for them) host. Barebones was okay for the two essential freebies. But after signing up with the new host, I read (can't read it *all* before cutting the deal) in one of their web forums (a user quoting an email response he got from Support): "It appears that the latest security update has broken the html pages which contain php code. In order to work the pages must have a php extension because our implementation of phpsuexec doesn't support AddType instructions in .htaccess" I've been using AddType for specifying charset (as often recommended in here and/or alt.html), and in the process of revamping one of the sites I'd added another for getting .html parsed by PHP. I'd like some opinions on this: is this a sign that I should bolt while I'm still within the 30-day money-back period, because I've just seen the tip of the "sorry, we don't do that" iceberg from these guys -- or am I just going to find that most hosting outfits have a bunch of inoperabilities and quirks like that that I'll just have to live with by tweaking my own code and/or approach? [1]Not Earthlink, which is my primary ISP. -- Blinky Linux Registered User 297263 |

Got me wondering what's comming soon to more hosts. -- Mr. D? Never trust a cat to do a dog's job. |

Just had it happen again with another host. They must have changed things last night. PageZone is about as reliable as you can get. -- Mr. D? Never trust a cat to do a dog's job. |

This is a very knowledgeable gang, here, and its input will carry a lot of weight. As far as your wondering about the future, yeah -- that's a concern, here, too. And, of course, if aggravations of this nature are commonplace, there's no need for me to bolt just so I can keep banging my head against the wall elsewhere; I'd be better off staying put, adjusting and just grumbling a bit. -- Blinky Linux Registered User 297263 |
