It does this by sending just the differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both sets of files are present at one of the ends of the link beforehand." I see where you're coming from, Toby. Just transfer the differences. Problem is the primary feature of the encyclopaedia is it's internal linking. When we do a build, we do a complete rebuild (all 2500+ source files), there could be a lot of differences between old and new files. For me, simple FTP is a straightforward and reliable solution. Matt, do you >*really* use *FTP* for the Probert Encycopaedia?! Seriously, have a look >at rsync!) I do, I shall. The transfer is very straight forward: Just 20 gzipped tar files (I have an unreliable connection so I don't like to transfer a single large file) sent to a remote directory, from whence a script un-compresses and un-tars them and then WAITS for me to personally check the transfer has been successful before I copy the files to their final resting place. I've encountered too many unreliabilities with "technology" to trust it. Matt -- If your encyclopaedia doesn't list "widget glass", you're reading the wrong encyclopaedia. The Probert Encyclopaedia. This is even > against common sense. It is perfect sense. Once the script has been written (perhaps taking 5 minutes) it can simply be clicked on every time the site needs to be synchronised. I certainly had a script to upload my site (back when it was hosted externally). It made things much easier and quicker to upload. (Mine used rsync to upload the files rather than FTP though. Matt, do you *really* use *FTP* for the Probert Encycopaedia?! Seriously, have a look at rsync!) I have a script run nightly from cron at work to download our website's log file (using FTP). -- Toby A Inkster BSc (Hons) ARCS Contact Me ~ http://tobyinkster.co.uk/contact |

For me, simple FTP is a straightforward and reliable solution. It is *very* smart at spotting the differences though. Whatsmore, it also compresses and encrypts the connection, which are two other advantages over FTP. I use Rsync over FTP whenever possible. -- Toby A Inkster BSc (Hons) ARCS Contact Me ~ http://tobyinkster.co.uk/contact |
