I actually use the number of files (in the statusbar of AceFTP)
to check if the local and remote folder are identical. I may
have 8 new files locally, and in the statusbar I can see at a
glance that I haven't uploaded them yet.

I can honestly say that, local or remote, I can't remember the last
occasion I needed to know how many files were in a directory. The size of
the files, sure. The number, no.

Recently I wanted to copy a folder and subfolders from my computer to a
remote computer. The files are for an install program. During installation,
the installer complained of a missing file and the install aborted. I had
the choice to resend everything again (resume didn't work) or check the #
of files in my computer against the # of files on the remote server. In
this case, WS_FTP LE couldn't help. I downloaded the latest version of
WS_FTP Pro and CuteFTP. It seems these newer versions do now allow multiple
instances of themselves. I decided to use my older version of cuteftp.
