Default My oldest gun

My father gave this to me, he found it back around 20 years ago sticking out of the ground about 100 miles north of Miles City Montana in the middle of no where. He was with a family friend of ours in a 4x4 checking out the back country when he noticed a small hunk of iron sticking up out of the ground. This thing is heavy as hell and is rusted shut. I can’t find any markings indicating the manufacturer or caliber all though it looks to be about a .30 caliber. There isn’t a town or ranch within 50 miles from where my father found it so this rifle has Got to be old.

You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass.

Well my friend I am almost 100% sure you have there a Sharps. They came in 50 Cal. Look up Weapons of the Civil War. It should give you some information. I almost forgot there were some made in 45-70 and a very few in 36 and 30 cal these were not for the military.
