Default Romanian AK47 project

I was at the Minnesota Weapons Collector gun show in Minneapolis yesterday and picked up a new project for me. An Romanian AK47 parts kit and new US made registered receiver.

… Before these AK47’s can enter the country the BATF requires that they be “de-milled” to non-gun status by cutting the receiver in half with torch. All that is needed to restore this weapon is to install a new registered US made receiver and several other US made parts like the trigger group, gas piston, Bolts, Floorplates, muzzle break, etc to meet the BATF compliance. Except for the full auto trigger group, It doesn’t mater what parts just as long as certain number of the parts are of US manufacture. As a rule of thumb you should use 6 US made parts the parts can even look exactly like the original. I will be replaceing the Receiver, Muzzle attachment, Trigger, Hammer, Disconnector and Gas piston on this project with US made parts. Other than the muzzle attachment all of the parts are internal and do not effect the appearance of the finished rifle. The US made parts set that I use comes with a slant brake that looks just like the original so the overall appearance is unchanged.

When it’s all done it should look just like this.

I plan on giving this rifle to my son.

Nice project, Scotto. Still kicking myself for ever selling my trusty, crusty SKS...

Well I got it “de-milled” and all the scrap parts off but it looks like I’ll need to order some AK47 receiver rivets and fabricate some special tools to do the job right…

Here is a mock-up of what it will look like…

Untill the AK rivets arrive I’ll start refinishing the stock and forward grip..

I decided to scrap the screw build Idea and do it right by using rivets

Whaaa Hoooo, The barrel pin just moved…..
Getting closer

She’s out !!

Now the barrel

Yah!! The barrel is free,,,

Made a jigg to set the rear rivet on the trigger guard and set that rivet.

Default Re: Romanian AK47 project

Well I got the trigger guard riveted and in place.

I also received a new gas tube latch to replace the broken one. $8 bucks plus $10 for shipping.

I fabricated a rivet tool from a 24” bolt to rivet in place the front and rear trunion

OK I got the front and rear trunion installed on the receiver.

Next, pressing back on the barrel.

Barrel is on!!!

Now I turn it over to my son; he will take it in to DPMS this week for paint. While he is doing that I’ll refinish the furniture.

First Zip Strip the old finish.

Then sand

I then washed the furniture with wine colored Rit liquid dye and alcohol. I also painted the characteristic black strip on the stock that’s found on "Romy G's".

Next I rubbed in linseed oil.

After the linseed oil dried I used a 320 fine grit foam sanding block to buff the parts
.

So far I have applied 4 coats of linseed oil buffing the parts between coats. I’ll do this 2 or 3 more times then in a few days after it has completely dried I’ll spray on a few coats of Minwax satin poly.
