| Enlisted Warrior ![]() | In the UK back in the 80's we used the SLR (Self Loading Rife) as our personal weapon. We nicknamed it the elephant gun because it was powerful enough to literally stop one in its tracks. At the end of the 1980's we moved to the SA80. I remember trialling this weapon in the arctic and the gun barrel started to bend and some times crack with the heat exchange created when firing it. Now they're using an SA80 2. Hopefully this will be better. The M16 seemed to be fairly reliable. What is the general thoughts on this? Regards Steven Preece Author Last edited by stevenpreece; 08-17-2006 at 14:56. |

| Enlisted Warrior ![]() | Come on guys there must be some opinions on this. Another good reliable weapon was the British GPMG. It was the equivelant of the US M60. The hard part was carrying the dam thing. It weighs 30 Lbs which is a lot on top of the rest of your equipment. Great fire power though. Regards Steve |

| Snake-eater ![]() | I never used the SA80, but I did use the M-16 extensively and found that it was a very reliable weapon. The M-60 was excellent and could put down a good base of fire. After using the Browning, air cooled .30 the M-60 was a great improvement, especially with the quick change barrel. Although it was heavy, I always liked the BAR. Browning was a fantastic gunsmith.

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | I have never been a real fan of the bullpup design. I have fired a Steyr Aug and was impressed but, I still like my AR15 or M1A. The M1A/M14 has the range and the power to take out anything I would want to shoot at. Jeff High |

| Snake-eater ![]() | Those are all good and we used a special version, M14A1/E2 with a starlight scope. That was an accurate weapon. For daylight "long shots" I liked the Springfield '03, 30/06 with match grade ammo and a scope.

| Snake-eater ![]() | A bolt action is excellent. The Springfield is what we use for the honor guard at my Legion Post and we bring them out for memorials and parades to fire the salutes. We have 4 Springfields and 4 M1 Garands in our arms room, but we prefer to use the Springfield. For my personal use (hunting) I use a model 94 Winchester 30/30 with iron sights. I learned hunting as a tracker from my Father and can get close enough to the deer that I don't need a scope on it.
