Is it just me? I always feel like 'kepiblanc' is shouting!
G3 and FN FAL are battle rifles not really assault rifles.
It's all to do with the size of the round they use. (By 'round' I mean the size of projectile, size of case and amount of propellant.)
So
5.56x45 = Assault rifle (M16/G36)
7.62/5.45x39 = Assault rifle (AK's)
7.62x51 = Battle rifle (M14/L1A1/G3)

Having used the FN, Steyer AUG, M16 my vote goes to the FN. The thing is extremely reliable and hard hitting. I used to be able to get a grouping of approx 150mm at 300m but since the Aussie army went over to the Steyer in 1993,ish I'm yet to get a better grouping. If you have read any books on the Vietnam war in regards to aussie soldiers fighting with NVA a lot of NVa regulars didn't like fighting aussie troops because they carried the FN 7.62mm. Where they fought US troops if they hid behing trees or logs most of the time the 5.56 rounds wouldn't penetrate whereas the 7.62 went straight through the tree and the soldier. They never mentioned the M60 the US were using but I'm sure it would have done the same damage. Theres nothing like weight of fire

Well, the SKS isn't listed, if it was it would have my vote. I've put mine through sheer torture in the desert, who knows how many cases of ammo through the barrel and it still performs where my buddy's M-16's and FN FAL's started to fail (jam, stove pipe, etc.). It might not be sexy, but it is simple and is accurate out to the 300m mark and beyond on point targets.

As far as thephattum 's comments, I pose that any weapon that can be brought to bear by infantry in a mobile situation on foot without the aid of a gunner's helper/ammo bearer can be used in an assault, and by definition is an assault rifle.

If a legal stance is required, then take a look at California's past & present laws....as flawed as they may be.
