New winner in Marine Corps Marathon

ARLINGTON, Va. — Tamrat Ayalew, originally from Ethiopia, won the 2007 Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 22 minutes and 20 seconds.
Ayalew pulled away and ran the final five miles alone as he unseated two-time defending champion Ruben Garcia.
About 20,000 people competed in the chilly, windy weather.
The first servicemember to cross the finish line was Air Force 1st Lt. Brian Dumm, who is stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea.
Dumm, 24, whose unofficial time was 2:28:27, said it was great to participate in the rivalry among the services.
“It was a great honor to compete with them, next to them and against them, and of course it was great to come out on top,” said Dumm, originally from Fairfax, Va.
Navy Lt. j.g. Stephen Slaby was the second servicemember to finish, with an unofficial time of 2:29:18.
Slaby, 26, stationed at Diego Garcia, said he was “hurting” and felt dizzy as he came up the last hill, “but it felt great to finish.”
Sgt. 1st Class Gerardo Avila, 34, was the first soldier to cross the finish line, with a time of 2:30:50, and Staff Sgt. Jeremy Brown, 27, was the first Marine to finish with an unofficial time of 2:32:22.
“The wind was rough and the last hill was a heartbreaker,” Brown said.
Kristen Henehan, 28, of Silver Spring, Md., was the top feamle finisher, with a time of 2:51:14.
Army 1st Lt. Ivan Castro, who ran in the Army Ten-Miler earlier this month, ran in his first marathon since losing his eyesight in Iraq.
Both of his guides dropped out, but Castro said he had no doubt that he would finish.
“I was not about to quit; I was not about to walk,” he said after a reporter writing a story about him helped him finish.
Before the starting gun Sunday, Mark McVicker hugged two members of the Pentagon Channel who were running in the marathon to honor his son.
Lance Cpl. Daniel McVicker, 20, was killed on Oct. 6, 2005, in al Qaim, Iraq, the elder McVicker said.
Mark McVicker, 48, said he met one of the people from the Pentagon Channel at this year’s America Supports You Freedom Walk in his hometown of Alliance, Ohio.
“It amazes me the people that reach out to us to honor our son and to show he’s never going to be forgotten.”
