Web site offers free magazines to troops

Deployed servicemembers can order up to 3 publications

By Leo Shane III, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Thursday, March 27, 2008

WASHINGTON — It’s time for troops overseas to renew those free magazine subscriptions.
Officials at Magazines.com are reviving the Subscriptions for Servicemembers program, which provides free magazines to military personnel stationed overseas.
And to pay for it, they’re once again asking regular customers to donate the subscriptions as a “thank you” to the troops.
“We want to reach as many deployed servicemembers as we can,” said Kitty Pedigo, business development manager for the Web site.
“The wonderful thing about a magazine subscription is that it’s a small piece of home that keeps coming every month.”
The program provides up to three magazines to overseas troops — those based at Europe and Pacific military bases as well as those in Iraq and Afghanistan — at no cost.
Pedigo said the revamped program offers 30 magazines to choose from, including a host of hunting and firearms publications, fitness titles like Muscle and Fitness, and the celebrity fashion magazine Star.
Magazines.com, backed by Anderson News and Time Inc., took over the Subscriptions for Servicemembers initiative from Primemedia Inc. last year.
Pedigo said requests will be filled as donors step up to fund the subscriptions.
“It may take a while for us to get donations to fill [troops’] requests, but we expect a lot of people to be interested in the program,” Pedigo said.
The donation site, Subscriptions for Soldiers, is being redesigned to allow online contributions — starting at $10 for a single magazine subscription — as well as targeted donations for friends and family members.
It should be completed by mid-April.
