| Racy Ol' Lady ![]() | I thought that was a pocket patch, Sir Blue. Not on the beret. For one thing, it would have marked the man wearing the beret, wouldn't it? Or is it a different patch?

I guess they wore it on a breast pocket? So, never on a beret... I guess that COULD mean, as I know I've done myself after the fact - that maybe IF he was MAC-SOG, he would have had to sew it on his beret? Did the guys wear flash on the beret, of any kind, DUI or DI or anything? Did they EVER wear that patch as a sleeve insignia? ![]() Snake! Where art thou?

| Snake-eater ![]() | That was a good job of recon, Sir Blue. That was never officially allowed on any part of the uniform. In VN the only flash allowed was that of the 5th Special Forces Group. A black flash with a modifed representation of the flag of the Republic of Vietnam superimposed diagonally on it and a white border around the flash. The RVN flag was diagonal from the upper left hand corner to the lower right hand corner, as you look at it. I still have my original berets from 40 years ago and they still look good. We never wore them in the field, they were only worn in garrison or with your dress uniform. Most of the people in RVN took out the lining and had a tailor replace it with a black, embroidered silk lining. The embroidery usually was a Dragon or a Tiger, and many even used black silk pantties. On the flash was put the unit crest for EM and the officers wore their ranks. That had to have been put on here in the States. We always kept one with the original lining for inspections

I'm going over there tomorrow (IF I can get Mrs. BH to come along) so, I'll ask to handle the beret and come back with a sitrep as to the lining if any. I do know that a lot of guys take their insignia after discharge and put it on all kinds of unnofficial places, I certainly did, and we've both seen it done... so, that is a maybe possibility in this case. I pretty much knew you didn't wear the beret in the field, so to speak... but, it was good info to know it was never authorized for display as it appears on that particular beret. The look of it, I gotta say, is that the beret is correct by itself, and the patch is correct by itself. The two together, I now know, is NOT correct when in uniform. What about my questions having to do with subsequent SF unit insignia for youz guys?

| Snake-eater ![]() | This damm laptop sent my message before I was finished. The lining in my other beret still has the original lining. It says: Beret, Man's Wool Rifle Green DSA-100-71-CO514 8405-087-5645 100% VIRGIN WOOL (it was hard to catch those sheep who were faster than the shepherd HE HE) Made in Ottawa, Canada.
