How many honest politicians have we had anyway? Harry Truman - I was beginning to pay attention about when ol' Harry went in office. He was honest, and there have been some in both parties since. But for moral degeneration, I believe the Democrats have sufficient in their corner to make them use this subtly, at least. The press once kept it quiet - Jack Kennedy was long gone before his morals were exposed to public view. We did know about Teddy, of course. But this may be used because of the orientation. All the blatant "coming out" that's been going on, it is not an acceptable situation to most people. The 'tilt' of this news story is a good indication of that, I believe.

Truman gets my vote as top 3 or so presidents we ever had. We could use one of him right now. Of course he was not a rich man so he would never get elected today.

Yes, that's a horrifying truth; the presidency not only can be bought, but it will be - nobody else need apply.

My brother told about when FDR died. A friend called him with "terrible news." My brother asked what it was, and his friend told him about FDR. "That is bad news," my brother said. "No," his friend replied, "the bad news is that Harry Truman is president now." My brother said, "No - that's the good news." They still bring it up - his friend came to realize just how good a man Harry Truman was. And oh, couldn't we just use such a man today! Every day, in fact. Blunt, straightforward, honest, clean, decent - I cannot think of enough good adjectives for him. One in a million, and we did have him for a while.

We've had decent presidents since then. Men of moral courage and good character. The contrast between these last two presidents shows us that. A quiet, contented woman in the White House is a relief too, isn't it!

The movie "Truman" is really good. I liked the part when he and his partner failed in business and his partner recommended bankruptcy. He said no that money is owed to the people we borrowed it from and they should not suffer because we failed. I am paraphasing but that is the type of man I think of when I think of Harry S. Truman.

That does say a lot about his character. He didn't take the easy way out or violate his principles.

Another story I love about him is when a man went into his office with an umbrella full of money. He was going to buy Harry! He wanted Israel to be a nation, and thought he could buy Truman's vote. Truman threw him and his money out; furious!

It was his friend and partner who persuated him to vote 'yes' on Israel. I forget the name of his partner, but he made a good case of it. Harry was never for sale to anybody for anything. Truly a man of integrity.

And I love that movie too, Scott. We have a couple biographies of Truman here. Books that we will not send to the library!

Default Re: Truman as president

Check out this website. It is a burgeoning "conservative" resurgence in the Democratic Party.

Truman National Security Project What they believe:
  1. Promoting democracy and freedom protects American national security.
  2. Robust military and intelligence capabilities protect American national security.
  3. Strong alliances protect American national security.
  4. Legitimate international behavior protects American national security.
  5. Free trade protects American national security.
  6. Promoting development abroad protects American national security.
  7. Comprehensive policy coordination protects American national security.

And on this page they have explained why they invoked Truman's name.

Bottom line, the current trends of both parties have them drifting further and further away form the center, where probably 80-90% of Americans would identify themselves if not forced to choose between two bankrupt political parties.
