TAMPA, FL (Talon News) -- Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, who led coalition forces to oust Iraq from Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s, accused the Democratic National Committee of claiming he supports Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John F. Kerry during last-minute telephone calls to voters on Monday.
Schwarzkopf called on the DNC to cease "making fraudulent phone calls [to voters] claiming that I have endorsed Senator Kerry."
"Nothing could be further from the truth, and I demand that they stop immediately," Schwarzkopf exclaimed in a statement.
Giving his reasons for opposing Kerry, Schwarzkopf said the liberal Massachusetts senator was against former President Ronald Reagan's arms defense build-up that "won the Cold War" as well as voting against removing former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein from Kuwait during the first Gulf War.
"Sen. Kerry proposed billions in intelligence cuts after the first attack on the World Trade Center," Schwarzkopf continued. "Sen. Kerry voted against funds to equip our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with supplies like body armor and ammunition."
Because of these positions held by Kerry, Schwarzkopf proclaimed, "I am supporting President Bush for reelection, because he is the candidate who has demonstrated the conviction needed to defeat terrorism."
Describing President George W. Bush as a man with "steadfast determination to defeat our enemies," Schwarzkopf said Kerry, on the other hand, "has a record of weakness that gives me no confidence in his ability to fight and win the War on Terror."
"[Kerry's] attempt to make up for these deficiencies by falsifying my endorsement only confirms my impression that he is not the man we need to lead our nation," Schwarzkopf concluded.
