Two things, Cuz.

For pound hauled or passenger mile traveled, trains use considerably less petroleum products than cars, trucks, airplanes. Also, electrification of the rail system, using coal or Nuclear Power, would almost eliminate the demand for petroleum products in the long haul business
Other than a gazillion gallons of oil and lube annually, true... they did not use petro fuels.

I'd LOVE to see our railroads be as active as they could possibly be, and to have an alternative to AmTrac for transportation between cities too.
