| Junior Officer ![]() | Internships available with the Department of State The Department of State has opportunities for student interns in Juarez, Mexico (see below) and worldwide, for students majoring in political science, business, economics, international studies, and/or interested in foreign affairs and willing to serve overseas and/or in Washington, D.C. November 1 for summer internships March 1 for fall internships CDJ Communications Intern Responsibilities: Assist the Communications unit manager in managing all external consular communications with Congress, lawyers, and the public. This will entail using technology to efficiently track and respond to inquiries from Congress and other groups as well as coordinating public outreach on behalf of the consular section and updating the website. Qualifications: Candidates should possess a general knowledge about Mexico, excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English, and computer proficiency (MS Excel required). CDJ Non Immigrant Visa Intern Responsibilities: Assist with a wide range of duties crucial to the unit's function, including fraud tracking, surveying/polling applicants and conducting statistical analysis and reporting. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to assist with the unit's public outreach activities. Qualifications: Candidates should possess a general knowledge about Mexico, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and computer proficiency. Familiarity with statistical theory a plus. Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred but not required. CDJ Immigrant Visa Intern Responsibilities: Assist with processing waivers of ineligibility for applicants trying to immigrant to the United States but found ineligible. He or she will prepare waiver requests for submission to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) liaison office, including those needed for ineligibility under criminal, medical, or other statutory grounds. He or she will also coordinate with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta the approval of waivers of ineligibilities under medical grounds. The intern will explain the waiver process to applicants and to U.S. citizen petitioners, in both English and Spanish. Qualifications: Candidates should possess a general knowledge about Mexico, excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English, and general computer proficiency. Candidates should be comfortable in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and be prepared to interact with diverse stakeholders ranging from government agencies to visa applicants. CDJ American Citizens Services Intern Responsibilities: Assist officers with a broad range of duties, including the assisting Americans detained by Mexican authorities, handling increasing passport application workload, determining the welfare and whereabouts of American citizens and the processing of other American citizen documents. Qualifications: Candidates should possess a general knowledge about Mexico, excellent written and verbal communication and computer proficiency. Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.
