Fitzgerald: John Esposito* and his credentials


In response to someone's relaying criticism levelled at him by Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch several months ago, John Esposito did not bother to respond. Or rather, his response consisted of an attack on the "scholarly" background of Robert Spencer -- no Ph.D. in Islamic or Middle Eastern studies, and the enclosure of what in Esposito's worldview constitutes an unanswerably impressive curriculum vitae that supposedly means game, set, match, without any need to actually adduce evidence of any kind about anything: "I attach my bio info" was the elegant phrase which was intended to answer all critics.That won't do.

Esposito allows himself to believe that mere credentialism -- defense by inflated C.V. -- will be enough to protect him from detailed criticism. With the credulous, admiring Dinesh D'Souzas of this world, who live by such things (and carefully put down every article, every lecture in their own comically ever-expanding C.V.’s), that may indeed work. For intelligent people who are well-versed in the tragicomic and deceptive aspects of curricula vitae, and are skeptical of those suffering from elephantiasis, such a defense will elicit only contempt.

And Esposito certainly didn't act as if he thought his “credentials” would be enough to protect him when he hurriedly went back and interpolated the word "Jihad" into post-9/11/2001 editions of his books, even though he continued to mislead readers about the standard, accepted, main meaning of that word (for Muslims, not for non-Muslim apologists such as...John Esposito).

Esposito is a "scholarly" colleague of, defender of, friend of, Azzam Tamimi, a Hamas supporter, whose quality of mind and thought can be gauged from this YouTube entry.

He calls another “Palestinian” Muslim fanatic, Al Farooqi (stabbed to death, along with his wife, by one of his own disciples), his “ustadh” or teacher.

Esposito has been on the Arab gravy-train ever since he convinced a Lebanese contractor -- an islamochristian who, had he survived, might not have quite as happy with Esposito as he might have been a decade or two ago -- to fund his “Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.” There is in reality no “understanding” -- or rather, in a nice reversal, it’s an understanding that passeth peace, and serves in effect, whatever its stated principles, as a long-running fount of apologetics for war, the war of Jihad, conducted not only or even, nowadays, mainly by qitaal (combat) but also by many other means, including “pen, speech.”

And the propagandistic nonsense put out by the “pen, speech” -- in articles including one with the piquant title that was published, in timely or untimely fashion depending on your point of view, in September 2001 -- of John Esposito has the effect of keeping Infidels in a state of unwariness, distraction, and confusion. He’s an updated Lord Haw-Haw, but at least the traitor William Joyce had to go all the way to Berlin to broadcast his propaganda on behalf of the enemy. Esposito can conduct his own operation -- the Prince Waleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown, right in the heart of Washington, D.C., just a mile or two from the Capitol and the White House. And he can continue to do this at a Jesuit institution, though one can be sure that the view of Esposito held by two well-educated clerics, Professor James V. Schall, S.J. and Pope Benedict XVI, is not one whit less critical than that to be found at this or similar websites.

What is to be done about the scandal of John Esposito and his exploitation of the Georgetown connection? Perhaps alumni contemplating gifts to Georgetown will have second thoughts, if made aware of the scandalous Saudi-funded operation run by John Esposito. They might make known that they will not be making such gifts after all, until such time as Georgetown severs ties with Esposito and his Center. They might make their gifts contingent on the university severing those ties, and removing the deceptive glitter of reflected glory that Esposito glories in and exploits whenever he refers to his “Georgetown Center” or, alternatively, his “Center at Georgetown," the one now being paid for by Saudi Prince Walid bin Talal, he of the facial tic and the check ostentatiously handed to Rudolph Giuliani.

Let him have his Saudi-funded operation. But let it be free-standing, without any further disgrace to Georgetown. Let the ghosts of Snouck Hurgronje and Joseph Schacht be properly propitiated at long last, for those highly intelligent ghosts -- oh, have you seen their c.v.s, by the way? -- see through Esposito. Place a paragraph by Snouck Hurgronje or Schacht on one side of the balance, and the collected works, coffee-table picture-books and all, of John Esposito on the other side, and see which side kicks the beam. Surely Snouck Hurgronje and Schacht are not pleased with the way John Esposito has been allowed to flourish and to exploit every kind of trust and naivete that the Western world and even the supposedly keen-minded Jesuits have displayed in his regard for so long.

This Investor's Business Daily editorial (June 12, thanks to Ruth King) nails today's Gitmo ruling from the Supremes:

Supreme Court: In a historic first, the right to habeas corpus has been bestowed upon prisoners of war — in wartime. Five justices gave terrorists a new weapon to kill more Americans with: our own Constitution.

There are many reasons why this year's election may be the most consequential ever, but Thursday's Boumediene v. Bush 5-to-4 decision in the Supreme Court is the most chilling reminder yet of how much our national security is at stake....

The court held that foreign enemy combatants at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. base in Cuba have the right to pursue habeas challenges to their detention in U.S. courts.

It is unprecedented in the history of U.S. law, and for all the soaring rhetoric in Justice Anthony Kennedy's opinion that "the laws and Constitution are designed to survive, and remain in force, in extraordinary times," the fact is that Gitmo detainees already had the equivalent of habeas corpus rights.

As Chief Justice John Roberts noted in his dissent, those terrorist POWs enjoy "the most generous set of procedural protections ever afforded aliens detained by this country as enemy combatants."

The real issue, according to Roberts, writing also for Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, "is whether the system the political branches designed protects whatever rights the detainees may possess. If so, there is no need for any additional process, whether called 'habeas' or something else."

But it was left to Justice Scalia, in a separate dissent also joined by the other three 'no' votes, to describe Boumediene's disastrous real-world consequences: It "will make the war harder on us," Scalia declared, reading from the bench. "It will almost certainly cause more Americans to be killed."

Of detainees already released from Gitmo, Scalia pointed out that one "masterminded the kidnapping of two Chinese dam workers, one of whom was later shot to death when used as a human shield against Pakistani commandoes." Another "promptly resumed his post as a senior Taliban commander and murdered a United Nations engineer and three Afghan soldiers. . . . Still another murdered an Afghan judge." And last month came news that another detainee committed a suicide bombing against Iraqi soldiers in Mosul.

Boumediene will force military attorneys to release evidence against enemy combatants to the terrorists' own lawyers. It will likely see U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan be called as witnesses. And detainees will have a legal right of access to classified information.

The decision "sets our military commanders the impossible task of proving to a civilian court, under whatever standards this Court devises in the future, that evidence supports the confinement of each and every enemy prisoner." He concluded: "The Nation will live to regret what the Court has done today."...

I think that is very likely.

Mahmoud Alkhazaleh stood in the street, and wouldn't get out of the way of traffic. When the driver honked, Alkhazaleh didn't move. The driver tried to go around him, but Alkhazaleh allegedly started to hit him and throw rocks at him. Then three of Alkhazaleh's sons started to beat the driver, spit on him, and throw rocks at him.

Alkhazaleh's sons have been charged with felony aggravated battery. Good. But a "hate crime"? Come on. That charge comes because apparently Alkhazaleh called the driver a "blue-eyed devil."

Now, I have no idea why Mahmoud Alkhazaleh wouldn't get out of the middle of the street. Maybe it really did have to do with some deep hatred of American blue-eyed devils, but I couldn't care less if it did. The only thing the law should be concerned about here is that he and his sons apparently gratuitously beat up this driver. He should be prosecuted fully for that, and deported if he is not a citizen. If he called the driver a "blue-eyed devil" and the driver called him a "Pakistani [expletive]," their mothers should remind them that "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me," and that should be the end of that.

The hate crime charge is why this story is here, not because Mahmoud Alkhazaleh is a Muslim. I don't post here any crime committed by any Muslim, but only those which have something to do with jihad activity. The key element of this story is the hate crime angle. If people can be prosecuted for insulting words, we are all in trouble. Soon they will begin prosecuting those who commit "Islamophobia," as the Organization of the Islamic Conference wants Western countries so very much to do. After all, why do you think CAIR and co. so consistently and indefatigably labels all Islamorealistic discourse as "hate speech"? They want to make it illegal for the kuffar to dare to point out that Muhammad and the Qur'an preach the subjugation of the Infidels under Sharia. Then it will be against the law to discuss the motives and goals of those who would conquer and subjugate us. And one of the last defenses against that conquest will have fallen.

And make no mistake: this is coming fast. The UN's "Deep" Doudou Diène is working on it, and American Muslims are helping him. Pakistan just asked the EU to restrict freedom of expression so as to curb "offenses to Islam." Finland just gave a blogger 2 1/2 years in prison for "insulting Islam." Mark Steyn is on trial in Canada for essentially the same thing. Yet the worldwide assault on the freedom of speech is completely off the mainstream media radar, and even most large American blogs are consumed with the election and trivia and have paid it little notice. We could very easily fall into a situation where it becomes a prosecutable offense to discuss the war that is being waged against us, and the big blogs have stories about space tourism and Dennis Kucinich's latest impeachment effort (uh, Dennis, the guy will be gone in 6 months). Nice going.

Prosecute Mahmoud Alkhazaleh, but drop the hate crime charges. And repeal the hate crime laws. Before it's too late.

A Northwest Side man was charged with a hate crime and his three adult sons were charged with felony aggravated battery in an alleged attack on a motorist in which racial epithets were shouted, prosecutors said.

Mahmoud Alkhazaleh, 53, of the 5500 block of North Mango Avenue also was charged with aggravated battery and vehicle invasion in a June 9 attack on a man who allegedly had honked his horn to prod Alkhazaleh to step out of the path of his truck, according to court documents.

Alkhazaleh called the victim a "blue-eyed devil" and an " 'American [expletive]' during a physical attack that included throwing rocks and spitting," according to court documents.

Alkhazaleh has denied using such language and said the incident started when the driver nearly ran him over.

The motorist was driving his truck on Mango Avenue on Monday when the elder Alkhazaleh stood in the street blocking the vehicle's path, prosecutors said. The driver honked, but Alkhazaleh did not move. The driver then tried to go around Alkhazaleh but could not pass, and Alkhazaleh allegedly started to strike him and pelt him with rocks, prosecutors said.

As the driver tried to call 911 from his cell phone, Alkhazaleh yelled out for three of his sons to join him in the street, prosecutors said. They ran out of the apartment and started to beat the victim, spit on him and throw rocks, prosecutors said.

Alkhazaleh, who was released Wednesday night from the Cook County Jail, said he did not use any hate speech during the incident, and claimed the driver started the fight. The whole thing started, he said, when the driver "came up the street, he almost hit me."

The two men exchanged words and, he said, the driver called him a "Pakistani [expletive]."

"I'm not even Pakistani," he said....

You can't have religion in public schools, unless it's Islam


While everyone is too busy with hurricane predictions and political cheesecake videos to pay any attention to the rapid erosion of the freedom of speech, the stealth jihad proceeds apace in another arena: the Islamization of American public schools.

With fatal terrorist attacks on the decline worldwide and al Qaeda apparently in disarray, it would seem a time for optimism in the global war on terrorism. But the war has simply shifted to a different arena. Islamists, or those who believe that Islam is a political and religious system that must dominate all others, are focusing less on the military and more on the ideological. It turns out that Western liberal democracies can be subverted without firing a shot.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the educational realm. Islamists have taken what's come to be known as the "soft jihad" into America's classrooms and children in K-12 are the first casualties. Whether it is textbooks, curriculum, classroom exercises, film screenings, speakers or teacher training, public education in America is under assault.

Capitalizing on the post-9/11 demand for Arabic instruction, some public, charter and voucher-funded private schools are inappropriately using taxpayer dollars to implement a religious curriculum. They are also bringing in outside speakers with Islamist ties or sympathies. As a result, not only are children receiving a biased education, but possible violations of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause abound. Consider the following cases:

* Last month, students at Friendswood Junior High in Houston were required to attend an "Islamic Awareness" presentation during class time allotted for physical education. The presentation involved two representatives from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an organization with a record of Islamist statements and terrorism convictions. According to students, they were taught that "there is one God, his name is Allah" and that "Adam, Noah and Jesus are prophets." Students were also taught about the Five Pillars of Islam and how to pray five times a day and wear Islamic religious garb. Parents were not notified about the presentation and it wasn't until a number of complaints arose that school officials responded with an apologetic e-mail.

* Earlier this year at Lake Brantley High School in Seminole County, Fla., speakers from the Academy for Learning Islam gave a presentation to students about "cultural diversity" that extended to a detailed discussion of the Quran and Islam. The school neither screened the ALI speakers nor notified parents. After a number of complaints, local media coverage and a subsequent investigation, the school district apologized for the inappropriate presentation, admitting that it violated the law. Subsequently, ALI was removed from the Seminole County school system's Dividends and Speaker's Bureau.

* As reported by the Cabinet Press, a school project last year at Amherst Middle School transformed "the quaint colonial town of Amherst, N.H., into a Saudi Arabian Bedouin tent community." Male and female students were segregated, with the girls hosting "hijab and veil stations" and handing out the oppressive head-to-toe black garment known as the abaya to female guests. Meanwhile, the boys hosted food and Arabic dancing stations because, as explained in the article, "the traditions of Saudi Arabia at this time prevent women from participating in these public roles." An "Islamic religion station" offered up a prayer rug, verses from the Quran, prayer items and a compass pointed towards Mecca. The fact that female subjugation was presented as a benign cultural practice and Islamic religious rituals were promoted with public funds is cause for concern.

* Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy, a charter school in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., came under recent scrutiny after Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist Katherine Kersten brought to light concerns about public funding for its overtly religious curriculum. The school is housed in the Muslim American Society's (the American branch of the Egyptian Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood) Minnesota building, alongside a mosque, and the daily routine includes prayer, ritual washing, halal food preparation and an after-school "Islamic studies" program. Kersten's columns prompted the Minnesota chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union to issue a press release expressing its own reservations about potential First Amendment violations. An investigation initiated by the Minnesota Department of Education verified several of Kersten's allegations and the school has since promised to make the appropriate changes. In a bizarre twist, when a local television news crew tried to report on the findings from school grounds, school officials confronted them and wrestled a camera away from one of its photographers, injuring him in the process.

* The controversy surrounding the founding of New York City's Arabic language public school, Khalil Gibran International Academy, last year continues. Former principal Dhabah "Debbie" Almontaser was asked to step down after publicly defending T-shirts produced by Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media, an organization with whom she shared office space, emblazoned with "Intifada NYC." But KGIA has other troublesome associations. Its advisory board includes three imams, one of whom, New York University Imam Khalid Latif, sent a threatening letter to the university's president regarding a planned display of the Danish cartoons. Another, Shamsi Ali, runs the Jamaica Muslim Center Quranic Memorization School in Queens, a replica of the type of Pakistani madrassa (or school) counter-terrorism officials have been warning about since 9/11. Accordingly, several parents founded Stop the Madrassa: A Community Coalition to voice their contention that KGIA is an inappropriate candidate for taxpayer funding....

Muslim American Society committing voter fraud in Louisiana


LGF has an astonishing story about voter fraud in Louisiana. Now, voter fraud in Louisiana may not seem to be astonishing at all, and about as common as gators or crawdads, but this story has a twist: the perpetrator is the Muslim American Society -- that is, the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States. The MAS, you see, runs the VIP organization that is criticized in the report below.

Remember that Muslim Brotherhood memorandum? The one outlining its strategy for the United States? The members of the Brotherhood, it said, “must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and Allah’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

This looks like a nice little piece of sabotage right here.

"State probes voter registration drive," by Marsha Shuler for Advocate Capitol News Bureau, June 11:

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne said Tuesday he will meet today with a Democrat-affiliated group responsible for a voter registration effort that is inundating East Baton Rouge and other parish registrars with bogus and incomplete applications.

Dardenne said his investigators are trying to determine if any state election laws have been violated as thousands of voter registration cards have been dumped on registrars offices through the efforts of VIP.

“We have some very real concerns about the data we are getting from them,” Dardenne said.

VIP is a Washington, D.C., group hired by national Democrats to register some 70,000 new voters in advance of the presidential and other federal elections this fall....

Dardenne said cards are being submitted for people already on the voter rolls and “a significant percentage are being submitted without necessary information to register someone and “blatantly false information."

Two cards received in Caddo Parish had George W. Bush as the voter applicant with a 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. address in Shreveport, Dardenne said. Other cards have been filed for prisoners who cannot vote and dead people. In Jefferson Parish, a voter registration card was filed for the registrar of voters....
