Anti-Porn Groups Demand Ban on Skin Mags

WASHINGTON -- Dozens of anti-pornography groups asked the U.S. Congress to force the Pentagon to keep sexually related material from being sold in military stores.

Pornographic material was banned from being sold in military establishments nearly 10 years ago, but Christian group American Family Association claimed that adult fare, including Penthouse and Playboy material, is still being sold in the stores, USA Today reported Monday.

The Pentagon deemed those materials aren't explicit enough to pull from its stores.

"They're saying 'we're not selling stuff that's sexually explicit' -- and we say it's pornography," Donald Wildmon, head of the American Family Association, told USA Today.

A letter-writing campaign launched Friday aimed to convince Congress to "get the Pentagon to obey the law," he added.

The Military Honor and Decency Act of 1996 is supposed to bar "sexually explicit material" from being sold in stores on military bases, the newspaper said. It defines porn as "the dominant theme of which depicts or describes nudity" or sexual activities "in a lascivious way."

I voted NO.

The pictures present what is undoubtedly one of our creators best works. Add to that there are far to many good, well written articles in those magazines. What guy doesn't remember the granny cartoons. Somehow sitting in the library reading GQ magazine just doesn't seem right.

I agree with Brian; after all, we do all know what we look like under the clothes. Leave them alone. Stop the constant interference with normality.

Too many groups treat the military like a captive audience. Men (and some women) read skin mags and no religious group should be allowed to impose their religious beliefs on the military like this. If it is legal, then it should be sold in the BX. No censorship by the military or any other group.

Yes, it is most definitely against the First Amendment. We could probably find a few laws it's against too, if we wanted to Shephardize it.

Interesting someone feels the same way according to the poll.

Would the honourable member like to elucidate why they feel that way? Maybe we are missing something that is truly damaging our troops moral well being?

Seems pretty simple. It was banned nearly 10 years ago.

I haven't voted, though. Because the "yes" choice is incorrectly stated. It should read:
"Yes, in accordance with The Military Honor and Decency Act of 1996."
