BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND — Perhaps there will not always be an England. An exodus unprecedented in modern times, coupled with a record influx of foreigners, is threatening to erode the character of the land of William Shakespeare and overpowering monarchs, a land that served as the cradle for much of American thought, law and culture.

The figures, making headlines in London newspapers, tell only part of the story. Between June 2005 and June 2006 nearly 200,000 British citizens chose to leave the country for a new life elsewhere. During the same period, at least 574,000 immigrants came to Britain. This number does not include the people who broke the law to get there, or the thousands unknown to the government. Britain's Office of National Statistics reports that middle-class Britons are beginning to move out of towns in southern England that have become home to large numbers of immigrants, thereby altering the character of neighborhoods that have remained unchanged for generations.

Britons give many reasons for leaving, but their stories share one commonality: life in Britain has become unbearable for them. They fear lawlessness and the threat of more terrorism from a growing Muslim population and the loss of a sense of Britishness, exacerbated by the growing refusal of public schools to teach the history and culture of the nation to the next generation. What it means to be British has been watered down in a plague of political correctness that has swept the country faster than hoof-and-mouth disease. Officials say they do not wish to "offend" others.

Hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers are about to be granted "amnesty" to stay in Britain. The government's approach is similar to that pursued by President Bush, who failed to win congressional approval for his amnesty plan. In Britain it appears likely to succeed. Migrants will be granted immediate access to many benefits, including top priority for council housing. Taxpayers will foot the bill.

The Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, called the policy a "stealth amnesty." Again, in a comment reminiscent of the debate in America, Sir Andrew Green, chairman of Migrationwatch UK, said: "This is yet another example of the Alice in Wonderland world of human rights. If you break British law for long enough, you acquire rights not penalties."

British media have carried stories about an Italian immigrant who murdered a schoolteacher and was sentenced to life in prison. He is about to be released after serving just 12 years. The government wants to deport him to Italy, but a combination of British human rights legislation and European Union law are making it impossible to do so. This does not bode well for deporting Islamic terrorists who call for the overthrow of the government and incite young people to acts of violence.

Abraham Lincoln said no nation can exist half slave and half free. Neither can a nation be sustained if it allows conditions that result in mass emigration, while importing huge numbers of foreigners who come from backgrounds that do not practice assimilation or tolerance of other beliefs. When one factors in the high number of abortions (one in five pregnancies are aborted in England and Wales), the high birth rates of immigrants (15 times those of white Britons), it doesn't take a population expert to predict that the days of the England we have known may be numbered.

The problem for Britain and the United States isn't just the change in demographics. It is the reluctance of both countries to inculcate the beliefs, history and, yes, religious ideals, which made our nations so successful that others wanted to come and be a part of them. The difference between many of the current immigrants and those of the past is that the previous ones wanted to become fully American or fully British. The current ones, in too many cases, would destroy what makes our countries unique. And the "leaders" of Britain and America refuse to stop it.
The greater tragedy is that the people of Britain have little say in any of this, so they are taking the road of last resort. They are leaving.

This is sadly an accurate image of GB 2007. My wife and I have also come to the inescapable conclusion that unless there is a serious change in the political situation and we get a party that is serious about tackling crime, immigration, taxation, education and the insane human rights legislation we will leave the country in the next two to five years.

We are both professionals, my wife a teacher and I an electrical engineer so we have no worries about alternate employment abroad. It just saddens me to see the state of this country; the lunatics have taken over the asylum. Criminals and illegal aliens appear to have more 'rights' than honest law abiding citizens, murder doesn't attract a life sentence just fifteen years, out early with good behaviour. My children will in all probability never be able to own their own home; a shortage of housing has forced prices out of the reach of many young couples. The house building program has barely kept pace with the influx of foreign workers that have arrived legally never mind those who arrive illegally but still require accommodation. A recent program on BBC4 had a council worker who was in charge of allocation of council housing admit that many of the families who had been on the list for housing as it became available despite being on it for years would never qualify as immigrants had a greater need and they were moved to the top of the list. A politician was cried down in parliament and in the liberal press for suggesting this without any of her detractors bothering to check the facts.

I love England but not what it is becoming, criminals released early to commit more crime because the prisons are full. A under educated, ill disciplined and surly teenage population with little sense and no morals, a society that welcomes fame for its own sake, a government which follows every news headline and values style over substance. A national broadcaster which apart from some notable exceptions follows a liberal left wing agenda despite its mandate to be neutral and honest in its reporting.

England has changed substantially over the last twenty years but it has got noticeably worse since 1997. There is a desire to split the UK up into independent regions, the promised vote on the EU treaty looks like it will not happen as Gordon Brown doesn’t feel we deserve a vote on our independence from Brussels but the Scots will get a vote on their independence from London. England needs some one to unite it as a nation and stand up for its own values and character. I for one will be sorry to leave England but it is rapidly becoming an alien landscape, not the country I was born in and grew up in.

Chris, you break my heart. England is the place we dream of, think of, as the quiet green countryside, the western cradle of Christianity and the way of life and government that is as near perfect as it can get. Outside of the US, that is. But I am afraid we can go the way your nation is going. We have in our Constitution certain mandates that may make it take a tad longer, but with the lot getting into government here -- in the three branches of our government -- the Constitution could become a document in history instead of the document our government is to live within and protect with the lives of our people.

I fear that rambles a bit -- but to see these two countries -- five countries, if you think United Kingdom and United States -- taken over by the likes of those described above, is distressing to say the least.

I know what you mean. My youngest son turned down a most lucrative and enjoyable position in one of the universities when the discussion barely bagan because of the changes he has seen in England since he went to school there. He loved it then; he can't bear to go there now.

You are so right Marianne there is a good chance that tthe US will go the same way. Pity because the root cause is in my opinion the very thing we are supposed to have defeated communism!

Here we go with another of my "I don't care if I offend people, these are my thoughts" posts. As you can imagine, there may be racism and what people may see as the thinking of a nutcase who supports the BNP. Quite frankly, aa divant care.

I can tell you exactly where the majority of them are - West Yorkshire. Huddersfield Uni is like a Newcastle United football shirt - half black, half white. In all honesty, its "spot a white man" sometimes in Huddersfield. I'm sick of getting mass emails sent from the Uni that pretty much assume everyone is an "international" student. If they keep it up, I'll be paying their office a visit to tell them that there are such things as white students.

Thats the way, let the country go down the pan so long as we don't offend people. Its getting to the stage where parents cant tell their kids to shut their mouths. "You cant tell me what to do! You have to treat me as an equal!" "Ye talk to me like that and aa'l give ye a clip round the lug-hole!" result = parent arrested for threatening a minor.

Taxpayers will foot the bill.

And how many will refuse to pay up? I know I will, because I know what will happen - I'll get a guided tour of a prison, and by the time I reach the cell my sentence will be over.

I've probably said this before, but if we want to keep Britain British and not Nigerian or Pakistani, we need to do something about it!

Human Rights? Hoy them out! They've pretty much become "Rights of Everyone But the Taxpayer" anyway! How do they all get into the country? Channel Tunnel and boats. Simple approach to that - flood the tunnel and deploy guns on the White Cliffs! We've survived however long separated from the continent, so it wouldn't be too much hassle to go back to it. Forget about "Fortress Europe", bring back "Fortress Britain"!

As for the prisons, theres a simple way of emptying them a bit. Its called bringing back the death penalty. I know for a fact that the old execution shed at Durham Prison is still there (holes are still in the walls for the gallows too) and with DNA evidence there shouldnt be too many messups. Doesn't need to be "Bloody Code" style, just for treason (anyone who wants to blow up our country, off to the Tyburn Tree for ye) and capital murder (murder with further criminal intent). Get rid of the years of appeals - I know of one trial that lasted 7 minutes (walk in, say name, enter plea, accept plea, sentence to death, walk out) and the bloke was executed 42 days later. One of the fastest trials and executions (hanging itself was over in under 10 seconds) with very little tax cash spent on them. Saves us a bit of money.

That should sort it out.

Irritates the life out of people because I will say what most of them are thinking and just haven't got the guts to say themselves, but what the heck?
