| Racy Ol' Lady ![]() | HOLOCAUST HUSH-UP: IT WON'T MAKE UK SAFE April 11, 2007 -- THE ISSUE: U.K. school districts that are removing Holocaust lessons from the curriculum. I was shocked to read "U.K. Schools' Sickening Silence" (Barry Rubin, PostOpinion, April 8). That a once-mighty nation should capitulate to a group of people whose fundamentalist beliefs are the antithesis of the culture that made that country great is an indictment of the present government of Great Britain. What's next? The adoption of Arabic as the official language of Great Britain? The saddest part is that we cannot depend on England anymore as a true ally in times of crises. It can't even stand up to assaults on the truth within its own borders. Chuck Eckstein Brooklyn ***** The Holocaust makes up only 5 percent of the total genocide practiced during the past century. If we, and the United Kingdom, had been teaching our children that all genocide is morally reprehensible and preventable, there would be no need to be politically sensitive to Muslim Holocaust deniers. Every genocide in history was preceded by restricting freedoms of the press, firearm possession, assembly and religion and by criminalizing thought. Western civilization is where reason replaces faith. It is through the application of reason to human problems that knowledge, science, industry, freedom, prosperity and health come to replace ignorance, superstition, manual labor, enslavement, poverty, sickness and death. The existence of Western civilization depends on its intellectual substance being transmitted to the young through the process of education Far from being guaranteed, Western civilization and its values can and will be destroyed to the extent that this process is brought to a halt. The end of the road of such a process would be a return to the Dark Ages. Chuck Braman Manhattan ***** If schools in Great Britain are going to ban references to the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslim students, they should be sure to omit any mention of Charles "Chinese" Gordon, the British general who put a stop to the slave trade in the Sudan, a Muslim country, in the late 19th century. It took the Sudanese quite a while to revive this traffic in human bondage, which continues to this day. Muslim sensitivities are bound to be offended by this blatant historical example of British imperialist interference in the internal affairs of a devout Islamic state. Dennis Middlebrooks Brooklyn ***** The elimination of Holocaust studies from U.K. school curriculums goes far beyond political correctness. This is outright bigotry at the state level. To offend one group, so as not to offend the biased and prejudiced sensibilities of another, is despicable for an individual, let alone for an entire educational system. If the United Kingdom is betting that such appeasement will make for a better and more serene environment there, it is sadly mistaken. History has shown that it's the monster that you feed that comes back to devour you. Josh Greenberger Brooklyn ***** This is another symptom of latent anti-Semitism by many Europeans. Western Europeans defer to the most violent and irrational, surrendering meekly to any challenge to their traditional values. Is it the cataclysm of 100 million deaths from war in Europe during the 20th century? Whatever the reason, they do defer to the irrational, and we here in America are not far behind. In the United States, our so-called intelligentsia bows to the threat of violence by those who challenge our beliefs and system. Hiding behind a public bravado, they are shaking in their boots. They have so much to lose to the uncontrolled and irrational - their safety, status and, possibly, their lives. ![]() | Did they give a reason? Umm well most of those posted are Jews so I can understand their dislike of the action. However what is behind them doing it? You see what we get when people try to shove things down people's throat with "Holocaust denial is illegal" group? We end up with the same factions we have with affirmative action radical vs. radical. Moderation must be maintained including holocuast education since no one but Germany, China and the Soviet Union have shown such contempt for human life. What did people expect? Did they actually think people like myself who say its wrong to stifle debate is wrong were actually Nazi's? This is the end game. Yeah I told you so. Those same people across the globe patting each other on the back in their stifle of historical debate are now whining like girlymen. Is it ok to say STFU now?

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | One other reason for the reduction in time spent on teaching the holocaust is it can't really be taught without mentioning the Nazis and our fellow Europeans (the Germans) feel we dwell to long on the Nazis and WWII in the history curriculum. Many of the intellectual elite in the teaching profession who actually have some influence on what and how history is taught do seem to have an anti Jewish or more acurately an anti Israeli bias, so there are other factors rather than a simple desire to placate the more radical muslims. Teaching in the UK has now become a politically rather than an academically driven profession with constant edicts from the government on what should be taught and how it should be taught. The superficial manner in which most subjects are covered with the sole aim of getting children through exams and not giving them a wider more rounded view is a travesty |

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | Since Labour came to power political interference in every field has increased we have politicians telling schools, hospitals, business and private citizens how they should conduct their affairs. It is a political model Stalin himself would have been proud of. CCTV, advisors, inspectors and co ordinators of every ilk have been created pry into our affairs and ensure we live our lives as the government believes we should. |

| Racy Ol' Lady ![]() | Whatever politics gets into, it ruins. That includes politics. But the schools should be sacrosanct. They must be taught history accurately; they should be set aside strictly for teaching reading, writing, math, science, history -- topics that are true and factual. We can't change history; teaching it without absolute accuracy is evil -- the next generation shouldn't have to dig for simple truth. Digging is needed for so many things; schools should be teaching the basic facts and no moralities, no religions, no ideas beyond what history and the classics can teach. Families are supposed to teach those things. Once they did. I don't mean they should avoid moralities; but they have so much to teach and morals and such really need to be taught at home. To teach the history of WWII without mentioning the holocaust is really evil. Anti-semitism is a fact of life; it cannot be avoided. It must not be ignored.
