It liberated the slaves held by rebels. SEC. 9. And be it further enacted, That all slaves of persons who shall hereafter be engaged in rebellion against the government of the United States, or who shall in any way give aid or comfort thereto, escaping from such persons and taking refuge within the lines of the army; and all slaves captured from such persons or deserted by them and coming under the control of the government of the United States; and all slaves of such person found or being within any place occupied by rebel forces and afterwards occupied by the forces of the United States, shall be deemed captives of war, and shall be forever free of their servitude, and not again held as slaves. source: The Second Confiscation Act, July 17, 1862

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | Tony Blair apologised for the slave trade and as of yet there have been not attempts to claim compensation but I should imagine its only a matter of time. There is certain to be some publicly funded case being prepared by some smart arsed lawyer intend on getting his slice from a potentially lucrative cake. Some of the discussions that I have heard on the topic by lawyers, economists and civil rights campaigners are positively frightening claiming that Britains entire wealth is based on the slave trade and as such compensation claims would be based on claims of Billions of pounds. Although how they come to this conclusion is debatable and completely ignores the industrial revolution in the creation of Britains wealthand the Royal Navy's role in the abolition of slavery. |

| Racy Ol' Lady ![]() | For the life of me, I cannot understand apologizing for what our ancestors did and feeling good about it. I agree with no reparations, and I think the welfare program is one of the worst attempts, which is how I view it, that has ever been made to any people. Help people to help themselves and it will work. Giving them what they do not earn only creates problems, as we've seen with welfare. That's so basic. Slavery is a bad blot on this nation, north and south. The north brought them in and bought and sold them there until they found that the weather was killing these people who had never had to cope with it before. In the south, they thrived and in time could cope in the north. Their descendants are free people, but welfare has enslaved them again, in many cases. Apologize for welfare and get that working, and then we will be helping them, which is far better than an empty apology.

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | Just another stunt for guilty whites and bytchin' blacks. Stay tuned for the "Where's My Check" stunt. Look folks, I despise slavery, it shouldn't have happened but it did. The North and South are equally to blame......but in the long run it's what we did in the end. Sure it took about 100 years to kill Jim Crow, (too long in my opinion) but killed it was. Could we have imagined even 40 years ago that blacks would be in the upper eschelon of government? Congressmen, Senators, Secretary of States, National Security Advisors, Supreme Court or even running for POTUS? It's where we have come.........not where we were. I think the bloodshed of the Civil War was enough apology to last a lifetime! Enough already! ![]() |

| Junior Officer ![]() | Miss Katie, I owe you an apology. I misread your original post and thought you favored raparations, and kinda, sorta, maybe, mouthed off. I am truly sorry. Again, my heartfelt apology.
