An Armed Forces News Service Realease, cited below, tells us that one brigade of Iraqi Army has just accepted 1500 former Iraqi soldiers. This was done with concurance Iraqi Miniistry of Defense (and presumably US Commanders in theatre and Washington).
This signals, to me, a correction of one of the major mistakes we made after defeating Saddam, we stripped the country of its armed forces. If the National government of Iraq is to have any power, and it must to defeat the insurgency, it must have an army with muscle.
Undoubtably, the Iraqi military of Saddam was filled with political appointees that would have remained loyal to the opponents of the new government, that had to be purged. That purging would not have been easy if the military had remained intact. So we threw them all out, and were left with a tiny remade army and police force, and even that is not totally loyal to the national government.
It now appears we are correcting that mistake, the reintroduction of the Iraqi veterans will beef up the force and make it more capable. Hopefully, national loyalty will be maintained by the exclusion of Saddam affilliated Bathists.
I sincerely hope this is the new tactic that our President and his commanders are discussing. The Iraqization of the war, to give the Iraqi national government the power to control it's own insurgency and eliminate the need for allied assistance. The exit strategy Bush has been talking about for years, Improve the quality of the Iraqi armed forces so they can take over the job the allies are presently doing.
