Default Can females be drafted?

Quick question :

Are females in the US eligible for a draft?

Should they be?

Default Re: Can females be drafted?

Good question John.

If the draft were reinstituted then drafting females because they have demanded equality I would guess they would demand to be included in a draft.

Would the MOS be restricted? or would women demand equality in every aspect? It's a whole different world now when it comes to rights. Advancement, pay & all kinds of criteria have to be considered before gender.

My thinking. There are plenty of military jobs that can be done out of harms way that women could do. For me it boils down to protecting the ability to continue the human race.

They can't be drafted now and only males have to sign up when they're 18. If a draft is reinstated, it would be blatent discrimination to exclude women.

Discrimination?? Come on... there is a legitamite reason why women are exluded from the draft, like BrianK said, to ensure the survival of humanity. Just imagine if women had been drafted into combat arms during WWII and Vietnam.

Equal rights means equal responsibilities and equal sacrifices.

Default Re: Can females be drafted?

I suppose it would be better to realize that technology has replaced the need for male only. The image of a soldier being dragged of a battle field is fading. Replaced now with as we are seeing in news releases from Iraq more house to house searches involving several well armed. Everything from operating a nuclear sub to operating a tank falls easily within the capability of any woman.

Not every male is capable of dragging a wounded soldier out of the line of fire. I think that is the image that is most often thought about when thinking about women in war. Those images are pretty much from the past; were dealing with a whole new way to fight a war.

I don't know if women have tried to qualify for the Army Rangers or the Navy Seals. Are there any women in those units? Would be intersting to know. If there are women in those units then any question of equality is answered. If not what caused the exclusion?

Women have tried, but the physical requirements are rigid and tough. The vast majority of women simply do not have the upper body strength and stamina to do what they have to do.
