War Photos History is full of wars and full of war photos. Some depict great victories, some great defeats, and some the bonds of brotherhood during times of war. But some depict something far more lurid and grutesque. Some depict war crimes. Others depict Executions. Some show mass graves. Some show dead soldiers photographed where they have fallen. Perhaps people posing with the dead.
The subject at hand is War Photos.
The last unit I was in had a war book. Photos taken in the first Gulf War. Some of these photos are disturbing to say the least and some of them show things you'd not want to see. Dogs eating Iraqi soldiers. Iraqi soldiers with their ears cut off. Soldiers all burned up. The Highway of Death. The grim reality of war.
These photos stay locked away. They will never be seen but for a select few in the Unit. I've seen them plenty of times. My guess is that every Unit has a war book, a collection of photos taken during the fog of war. It makes me think about the Iraqi abuse scandal and the motivation behind taking those photos. Why would they do that? For posterity? To be seen later? For a Unit war book?
I'm sure they never thought anyone outside the Unit would ever see the photos.
It is said that soldiers are not supposed to take pictures of enemy KIA's...
We'll never see all the War Books and that's a good thing I think, but imagine if we could what they might show us. Would we really want to see?
