Default Schism in the Anglican Church?

I've been waiting for this to happen. I remember reading about the possibility a year or two ago, when they made an active homosexual a bishop. Is this the beginning of a major schism?

Nigerian Anglicans Break With Canterbury

Angry over other Anglican churches' tolerance of homosexuality, the Anglican Church of Nigeria has deleted from its Constitution all references to "the See of Canterbury," the British "mother" church that links Anglican churches worldwide into a global communion.

The step further institutionalizes the division over homosexuality between Anglican churches in most of the developing world and those in Britain, Canada and the United States.

The Constitution of the Nigerian church, led by Archbishop Peter J. Akinola, above, says it will now be in communion only with churches that "maintain the historic faith, doctrine, sacrament and discipline."

The Nigerians said the change would allow them to reach across geographic boundaries and provide "worshiping refuge to thousands in the U.S.A." who have refused to accept the 2003 decision of the Episcopal Church USA to ordain an openly gay bishop in New Hampshire.

I'm glad to see this, Katie. Maybe a few more defections from the highly defective and heretical teachings now a part of that wonderful old denomination will make some within it take a hard look at what they have allowed to take place.

I don't believe I could ever go back to it; I'm Catholic and have always considered that of primary importance because of the sacraments. I'm even comfortable with the shorter services, although I'll always miss decent music which was unnecessarily lost after Vatican II, at least where we go.

But this break with the much larger portion of Anglicanism that is found in Africa. It is truly an African denomination - and they have a wonderful tradition to uphold. And that is what they are doing.

Katie, thanks for this - you can't know how it hits me. Nothing beats seeing the possibility of the resurrection of a once-magnificent church, no matter that it's a hemisphere and continent away. Watching the march of Christianity, we see that it is now moving strongly in the southern hemisphere and in the East.

Sorry if this emotion seems inappropriate, but my heart is very much Anglican.

I remember that you were Episcopalian before you switched over to join us Roman Catholics. I miss the music of pre-Vatican II but prefer the shorter services and it being in English. IMO, there is no valid reason to drag out worship services ... they lose people's attention, but the last parts are good times to day dream, make grocery lists etc.

I have to admit, Katie, that as years go by the shorter service is easier to attend. Kneeling get difficult with age also, and the minimalized kneeling is also a help. But I miss the music - so I get it on CD's. And I get the magnificent Roman music of Vatican I and Gregorian Chants - and so on; on CD's. And sometimes I sit here playing those and Orthodox liturgical music by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff or whoever; or Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra!

If we get to missing it too much, we can go to Easton to St. Andrew's, which is Bobby's former church. They have it all, including Sacraments. The reason I don't go there is that I've made my mind up to be Catholic. I'm sure of it where I am. I can sacrifice music for that while in church. And on the occasion when we sing a verse or two of a favorite, it's a bonus.
