WASHINGTON - Six years before the Sept. 11 attacks, the CIA warned in a classified report that Islamic extremists likely would strike on U.S. soil at landmarks in Washington or New York, or through the airline industry, according to intelligence officials.

And in 1997, the CIA updated its intelligence estimate to ensure bin Laden appeared on its very first page as an emerging threat, cautioning that his growing movement might translate into attacks on U.S. soil, the officials said, divulging new details about the CIA's 1990s response to the terrorist threat.

Well, after reading that, I can see why the reluctance to cope with any responsibility for the war on terrorism. It really could have started as a pre-emptive strike in Afghanistan. At the very least, we should have been building up the military - not tearing it down even further. Apparently Tenet released this information for his own benefit.

Whatever it takes! All that is hidden....

Gosh, Robini! You mean it's not Bush's fault? They sure are trying to make it his fault, aren't they; rather than blame bin Laden and/or al Qaeda, who are behind the whole thing.

Certainly it was obvious that the US was a prime target of whatever was going on with that lot; Lebanon, Somalia, USS Cole, the embassy in Africa. Ah, but it's an election year and the man who took the war to the perpetrators is running for re-election. Obviously he's to blame.

Whatever mistakes he's made, I just can't buy it that Bush is to blame for 9/11.

No...The Bush admin. is not responsible for 9/11. I don't believe that can be pinned on any person or group of Amercans. al Qaeda is not made up of fools and idiots. Why should it surprise and amaze anyone that they were able to pull it off w/o anyone knowing it was coming? Expecting that "something" will be committed against the US at "some time", is hardly the same as pinpointing what that thing and time will be.

I agree. Bush was only in office 8 months when they hit us, and nebulous warnings are enough to stop an attack. Clinton had 8 years of terrorist attacks on us overseas and failed to effectively act against them.
