Default Kuwait seeks death for Saddam

Kuwait seeks death for Saddam
Quote:
KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait has demanded the death penalty in its indictment against former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussain for crimes against the emirate, Justice Minister Ahmad Baqer said yesterday.

“Yes, the indictment calls for Saddam’s death for a large number of crimes,” during the 1990-1991 Iraqi invasion of the oil-rich emirate, Baqer told reporters.

“Our (indictment) files are ready. It contains evidence and eye-witness accounts against more than 200 defendants ... We are seeking judicial co-operation with Iraqi authorities,” the minister said.

The indictment papers have been submitted to the Foreign Ministry which will forward them to the Iraqi authorities through diplomatic channels, he said.

Kuwait’s public prosecutor Hamed al-Othman said in May the indictments were against Saddam, eight of his top aides and 293 senior officials of the former regime.

Saddam, whom the US-led coalition captured in December 2003, ordered his army to invade Kuwait on August 2, 1990, occupying it for seven months before being driven out by a US-led multinational coalition.

The Iraqi government announced earlier this week that Saddam will go on trial on October 19 over the massacre of Shia villagers more than two decades ago, for which he could face the death penalty.

Iraqi government spokesman Laith Kubba said if Saddam was found guilty for killing some 143 Shias in 1982, he could be executed without waiting for further trials.

The Kuwaiti indictments charge Saddam and his top aides with crimes against humanity, war crimes and the use of armed force to invade Kuwait.

They charge that Iraqi troops abducted 605 people and refused to reveal their whereabouts. After Saddam’s ouster in April 2003, the remains of some 200 of them were found and forensic examination showed they were shot in the head. – AFP

As an advocate for the death penalty, I can certainly understand their desire to see Sadaam pay with his life.

Kuwait can wait. It's not there place to call for the death penalty. They were not killed in there thousands.

The only people who should decide Sadams fate are the people of Iraq.

I agree that the Iraqi's should decide his fate, but do see the Kuwaiti's wanting him to get the death penalty. He committed atrocities in their country after he invaded.

I see it much like it is here in the US. When one "state" gets done prosecuting and punishing a criminal, another "state" gets a crack at him. If one of the sentences turns out to be the death penalty...oh well.
