Historian reports theft of FBI files on Kerry

JOHN M. GLIONNA; Los Angeles Times

A historian on Friday reported the theft of three boxes of confidential FBI documents, some detailing government surveillance of presidential hopeful John Kerry when he was a spokesman for a 1970s veterans group protesting the Vietnam War.

Gerald Nicosia told police the theft occurred sometime Thursday from his home in Corte Madera, a San Francisco suburb, said Sgt. Chuck Lovenguth of the Twin Cities Police Department.

"I don't know who could have done this," Nicosia said Friday.

Nicosia had received 20,000 pages of internal FBI surveillance files in 1999 through a Freedom of Information Act request. He was researching "Home to War," a chronicle of the Vietnam protest years, but the release came too late for use in the book, which was largely about Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Kerry was a leader of the group, which had 10,000 members nationwide.

Nicosia says he suspected that the thieves were specifically in pursuit of the files because a camera and other expensive items in the home were left untouched. He added that he did not know exactly what material was taken.

Nicosia has not yet looked at all the files. Last week he allowed The Times to photocopy 50 pages concerning the FBI's monitoring of Kerry in the fall of 1971.

The files he allowed The Times to review showed that Kerry, who served in Vietnam as a Navy officer, was closely monitored by FBI agents for more than a year between 1971 and 1972 as he traveled the country protesting the war.

Now, hmmmm, who would not want those records to get into the general public? I mean, why would the Republican camp steal something they could just get like this journalist did under the freedom of information act?

No, I smell....."Kerry Gate" I wouldn't doubt if files disappear from ANYONE who requests them.

I'd like to know what those 20,000 pages contained. Senator Kerry must have made someone mad if he had 20,000 pages on him! I mean, I don't think I've done anything interesting enough in my entire life to fill up 20,000 pages. Wow, Senator Kerry must have been a busy boy!

He was being shadowed by the FBI because he was protesting the war? Nice.

He was also one of the leaders in an org that was planning to kill several congressmen and senators.

Ahh! Thanks. I didn't know that. Was it known that he was part of this organisation while these protests were going on, on did this news surface later?

Gosh, you're a cynical one, C! I must point out though, that if you read closely, you'll see that only some of those files were about Kerry. Most people would be lucky to rate 20,000 words, let alone pages.

My mistake, then, I miss read the information. I was going to say, what was he up to??? In any case, the fact that he was part of an organization planning to kill senators and congressmen, that's bad enough. Sorry, but in that case, "guilty by association" applies. If you don't want to be associated with/accused of that kind of activity, don't be the head of an organization that is known to plan those kinds of things. That's pretty disturbing.

Maybe one day my life will be exciting enough to warrant 20,000 pages. But hopefully good pages, not bad pages.
