| The Librarian ![]() | Sherry, no one could ever call you a burden. Me either I hope!!! I think that the problem with Social Security is NOT the aging population. It was designed as a prop for the aged, the retired workers, that paid into the system. It is approaching a point when someday it might be in problems, not because of the aging and longer living workers, but all the free loaders, that never paid into the system but have been put on its roles. The government has had the use of my SS taxes for over forty years, I start collecting in June, these, like a military pension (which I am not getting), are entitlements that have been earned by a lifetime of committed service and investment. No one seems to be complaining enough that the free loaders are endangering the system. |

| Bad kitty...bad kitty...shame! ![]() | I work one day (+) for the government. I chose Mondays. They can have my Monday pay. Freeloaders. Correct. I've worked since I was 16. I'm 47 now. There better be something there for me when its my turn.

| Junior Officer ![]() | The projection in the article calls for a continued increase in wages in order to pay for the programs. Also calls for increase in taxes by those still working in order to pay for the benefits. We've seen how technology is replacing manual labor. We've been told that India & China are consuming more and more energy to out produce America. Not usually mentioned is the advances in technology that Israel is achieving which would begin eating away at our competative edge in that arena. If those activities are detracting from job & wage improvement is it logical to project a system that will be able to pay the benefits? Add to that what is known. A shrinking workforce and more retirees longer living. Is it really a big mystery where this system is going? Raising the age to begin collecting benefits, higher taxes on wages, & other proposals are floating around. None of them are going to easy to take no matter what ends up being the support system for Soc. Sec. The good news is the politicians don't want to upset people. Almost like in the military if people don't ask they don't tell. The most basic underlying problem with Soc. Sec. is that it went from it's original intent, to supplying money for pork barrel spending. Between that and social welfare [ fraudulent claims not investigated & pure abuse of the freebies within the system for those that didn't pay in] all to get politicians re-elected. It's going to be close if not there relative to what has been paid in for those in their 30's & 40's. All you have to do is look at what is taking place and the mystery is gone.

Even though the last two are worthy, there is no way that should come out of the social security fund. That should be reserved ONLY for aged, retired workers who paid into the system either by actually working or being the stay at home spouse who raised the kids. I read in our paper about an 86 year old Russian man who was on social security disability and he had been in the country for 3 or 6 years. I forget the exact number. Why was he getting disability? He did not pay into the system.
