| Banned ![]() | The difference between how we perceived terrorist threats as a nation in the 1970s and how we perceive them now is simply that we do not identify a country per se as terroristic but rather groups of people. In the 1950s and 1960s the fear were of a communistic terrorism overtaking us. When Moscow had missles in Cuba pointed right at us, we understood as a nation the meaning of that terroristic and tyrannical threat and its reality - and as a result on the last Friday of the month school children at 10:00 a.m. faithfully heard the air raid sirens and did drop and cover drills, believing somehow those light-weight flimsy desks might save our spirits from being crushed or our bodies broken. Terrorism has always been something that our government has dealt with - and indeed our roots are in the battle for independence from a tyranny that used terror to try and defeat the struggle for freedom of American patriots and their families. As weapons of warfare have advanced, our response has changed - but terrorism has always existed to suppress mankind's urge to live and think and be free. As Americans we must remain acutely aware, however, that any time you give too much power to the government, you are sacrificing a portion of that freedom we cling to and fight for so dearly. Finding the fine line of balance between securing our freedoms and giving away our rights to a free life is just as dangerous to who we are as Americans and our democratic republic as the terrorist threat in and of itself! We must remain cognizant that in our desire to be secure, we don't lose all that is dear and worth securing. |

| Junior Officer ![]() | Cal an excellent post! It is truly a fine line indeed that this country must now walk. Just where do we draw that line in the sand for the sake of our safety? And at what point do we take back freedoms given up freely? We give our government a mandate through elections to act on our behalf. We trust in good faith that the results would not be used against the people. We must guard against the day someone attempts to take away the freedoms from "We the People".

| Head Zookeeper ![]() | Wow, Cal, where did that come from? Well said indeed! A stirring call to arms, a clarion call to all freedom loving people, terrorism is at the doorstep, come out of your cozy enclaves, turn off your reality TV and wake the hell up!
