Default Accused Deserter on Navy 'Most Wanted' List

This really chaps me. We saw his disappearence then he came back. Now once again he is missing and AWOL, charged with desertion. I know the US did not have any real number of translators for Arabic before 9-11. But I would have to think that some background check above the usual was run on him. How did he slip through the cracks?

Accused Deserter on Navy 'Most Wanted' List
Friday, January 14, 2005

WEST JORDAN, Utah — A Marine who was declared a deserter days before military court proceedings stemming from an earlier disappearance from Iraq has been placed on a list of "most wanted" fugitives.

A mug shot of Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun appeared this week on a Navy criminal justice Web site, which claims the missing corporal now uses the alias "Jafar." His placement on the Navy list puts him among a select group of fugitives, some of whom are being hunted on allegations of terrorism, murder, conspiracy to commit murder, indecent assault and rape.

Military officials say they have no information about the 24-year-old man's whereabouts, and have been unable to confirm news reports that Hassoun was in Canada or Lebanon. Officials at his base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., did not immediately return a message left after hours seeking comment.

Military officials say that Hassoun has no passport. And Mohamad Hassoun, a brother, confirmed reports from Lebanese government officials that the Marine is not allowed back in that country.

Hassoun's family has said they last heard from him Dec. 29.

When he failed to arrive at his base in Camp Lejeune, N.C., by Jan. 5, Hassoun was declared a deserter for a second time.

Hassoun was an Arabic translator for the military when he first disappeared from his post in Iraq last summer. He later surfacing in Lebanon where he claimed he had been kidnapped. Al-Jazeera Television showed video of Hassoun blindfolded.

A five-month investigation by the Navy found that Hassoun had stolen a Humvee and fled his camp near Fallujah. On Thursday, a pre-trial hearing on charges of desertion and theft was postponed because Hassoun remains missing.

Hassoun is a Muslim with citizenship in both the United States and Lebanon.

Family members in both Utah and Lebanon have called on the corporal to surrender.

I hope they do get this guy. I have felt he was a deserteer all along. Now it is evident. If he was not he would have been able to try to prove or would have at least attempted to prove he was innocence. In my eyes running proves guilt. I will be glad when they find this man and charge himaccordingly and turn him over to my boys out at Camp Lejeune Base Brig.

Let’s say that he is caught and sentenced to say 20 years. Where would he eventually end up, Norfolk? And what would be in store for him along his path to get there and after he arrived? I know the Army eventually will end reside at Ft. Leavenworth, but I really do not know where the Navy or Marines who are sentenced to long term imprisonment end up

He would probably go to Lejeune for a few years on solitary confinement. He would then be transfered to Leavenworth. It is a multi service prison system. All long termers go there. He may go directly there due to the high profile of this case tehy may send him there and not house him in Lejeune at all. If he gets a long term sentence though he will eventually end up in Leavenworth with all other branches.

Although I never had the pleasure of visiting the places I recall that there was Norfolk, Vir. and Portsmouth, NH. How do they function in relation to the prison system the military runs?

Where ever this scum goes he is going to have a problem. Though they may be in prison I suspect some people will take a shot at this traitor. Solitary confinement plus hard labor may not be enough.

The military prisons are run the same as a federal prison we are all governed under the same rules. Military is a bit harder I would say as the guys watching you do not put up with any shiat. Civilian prison system is a little more leniant in some ways than military brigs.

We don't need to accept people who cannot be thoroughly vetted as translators. Israel offered to provide them to us, but we didn't want to offend the Muslims by accepting them. So...we put our own at risk in order to not offend them.
