Default Graner Found Guilty in Iraq Prisoner Abuse

I'm glad that he was found guilty of this abuse. Now they need to apply the same standards to Lyndie England and the others. My daughter, who was an Army MP, feels somewhat vindicated. She, too, hopes they slam the females and don't give them any leniency based on their sex.

Graner Found Guilty in Iraq Prisoner Abuse
Quote:
FORT HOOD, Texas - Army Spc. Charles Graner Jr., the reputed ringleader of a band of rogue guards at the Abu Ghraib prison, was convicted Friday of abusing Iraqi detainees in a case that sparked international outrage when photographs were released that showed reservists gleefully torturing prisoners.

Graner, the first soldier to be tried on charges arising from the scandal, was convicted of all five charges and faces up to 17 1/2 years behind bars.

The jury took less than five hours to reach the verdict.

The verdict came after a five-day trial in which prosecutors depicted Graner as a sadistic soldier who took great pleasure in seeing detainees suffer. He was accused of stacking naked prisoners in a human pyramid and later ordering them to masturbate while other soldiers took photographs. He also allegedly punched one man in the head hard enough to knock him out, and struck an injured prisoner with a collapsible metal stick.

The jury of four Army officers and six senior enlisted men rejected the defense argument that Graner and other guards were merely following orders from intelligence agents at Abu Ghraib when they roughed up the detainees.

Graner, a 36-year-old reservist from Uniontown, Pa., was convicted of conspiracy, assault, maltreating prisoners, dereliction of duty and committing indecent acts.

Each count required that at least seven of the 10 jurors to agree for conviction.

Good now they need to get the Brass, including that General that ran the place.

However, Rumsfeld and company does not want her on trial, they do not want us to know where her orders came from the orders behind the use of torture. Just a theory of course.

I find it very, very, very hard to believe a PFC was the ring leader. I also do not trust how his commanders now talk about how hard he was to control and how he was out of control. Not only did they turn on their own but I doubt much of what they said, if they are telling the truth then they were poor commanders and Graner should never have been there to start with.

He wasn't a PFC Caldric~

Burn them all IMO. Lyndie's trial seems to have disappeared... Why? I don't give a rats ass if she is a new mom~ She did the crime. Her sex or parental status should not exclude her from these proceedings.

I love the fact that they shot down her attorney's attempts to pull in the big guns and try to deflect blame and attention in their direction. HA!

What's burning my butt is that the command structure of that prison is getting away with it. I couldn't believe BG Janis Karpiski, USAR, telling reporters she "wasn't responsible."

If the intel people were pushing it, they should be burned too. Intel gets away with too much.

Graner was at least a Spec-4 or 5 - but you are right not even an NCO. From what I have read in an albiet liberal-biased press, it sounds like the whole lot should never have left the states to serve and that morality and discipline were issues both stateside and in Iraq within this unit - from the last defense witness to testify who was granted immunity in exchange for testimony and thus now a civilian and current love interest of Graner to Lyndie England who is claiming to be pregnant by Graner. I truly hope that Graner gets the full 17-1/2 years ... and I hope a chain of command can be followed up and then proven on the ground, on site and held accountable for the actions of these rogue enlistees. I also hope that Lyndie England's mother does a better job raising Lyndie's child than she did Lyndie - but she already has one proven moral, ethical, and discipline failure. Just my opinion.

They definitely need to get that general. She was the one in charge and she set the tone.

He was a Specialist, not a PFC. I think we see that there was lax leadership there. England kept going against orders to go to the prison and kept being 'counseled' when she should have gotten punished. I believe them. Only a hunch here, but I bet that many who testified were sick and tired of the way some kept getting away with things and finally had the chance to speak out.
