What was his motive for treason?

AJFA, maybe it was his belief in Islam - that he had to do what he was told by one of their clergy. Islam is supposed to rule every facet of a believer's life from birth on. The converts to any religion are known to be more devout - more obedient to that religion - than most who have grown up in it. It could be that simple.

Or perhaps he was dissatisfied with something in his life and blamed the US or the government - and took this way to try and change it.

Whatever it was, he was certainly far from knowing the truth of what we have and the truth of what Islam offers. I can't understand what it is that leads people to be traitors, but there have always been some going that route, as we know. I doubt if there's a single reason for it - other than not having a sense of decency and responsibility for one's acts.
