Nuclear missile base for sale on ebay

The owner of a US intercontinental ballistic missile base has put it up for sale on ebay. For an asking price of $1.5 million (£750,000), the 57-acre former Larsen Air Force complex and ensuite Titan ICBM facility offers a level of period detail that only rarely finds its way on to any property market.

Offering 43,000 square feet of “usable” space - not including the tunnels - in 18 underground chambers and ceiling heights of up to 155 feet in the three silos, it seems almost churlish to complain that a previous owner has removed the missiles and nuclear warheads.

The electrics and plumbing will need reinstalling but two of the missile silos still contain about 90 feet of rocket-holding structure.

There are also three four-storey equipment and propellant store rooms, two antenna silos, a domed control centre which is 100-feet diameter, and an even more roomy power house.

The base, built in the 1950s, is located near Moses Lake, a remote part of Washington state. The vendor, Bari Hotchkiss, describes the base as a “gorgeous” property and potential resort.

Mr Hotchkiss, a Los Angeles businessman, bought the site 10 years ago and used it as a summer camp for his children and their friends.

He said: “It is kind of like a big shopping centre underground that needs to be refurbished. “The only limit is imagination. We’ve always wanted to see it turn into a summer camp or resort camp.”

The complex’s military hardware was removed in the 1970s when the US government abandoned the Titan bases.

Mr Hotchkiss said there are 18 former Titan bases and nearly all of them were sold off. He claims his is rare in being dry.

He admitted that full refurbishment would cost several million dollars but added: “If you only need one or a couple of the buildings to begin with, several hundred thousand dollars might do it.”

Amazingly, even the Larsen base is not quite unique.

The website missilebases.com is offering a former Titan base outside Denver, Colorado, for $1.8 million cash.

The website says the base “bring new meaning to the word ’shelter’”, adding that such properties are the “castles of the 20th century”.
